Will the new AMD M2 and Intel Presler/Cedarmill socketed chipsets make 939 look like cow dung? 🙁
I would love to get a new comp now, but I'm worried the new tech will destroy the comp I put together for 2300. That's a lot of dough and I won't be upgrading for a long time if I do get it. I have been reading the news releases, but there's so many varying opinions it's hard to tell which is accurate. U super wizzes wanna share your thoughts? :)
This is just a discussion, don't bash me on my stupidity for worrying about the future  although I really shouldn't be worrying about it.
I hear the DDR2 implementation in M2 or even a possibility of DDR3 is on the agenda. Will DDR still be able to keep up with it's super low latency timings?

I am interested in seeing what everyone says about this because I too am thinking of upgrading my computer(CPU,Mobo,GFX) into 939 but if they stop making 939 cpu's in the next 6 months that would be no point, or at least id suppose.

XeroCool

I don't think DDR2 can keep up super low latency timings, due to they sacriface it in order to get more speed.

It depends, if you REALLY want a new comp and you can't wait, go for the s939, it isn't that bad. The M2 has just been delayed; it seems the fact that it will use DDR2 won't be such a great advantage; the first M2 Motherboards will be crappy and they'll still be making some s939 processors after the M2 launch.

IMHO, both new platforms coming out this summer are stop gap measures that will not be much better than what can be had right now. I think by 2007 there will be new mobos and chips. I think Intel will definitely be using a new platform by then. Both platforms had alot of potential, but neither company will let the cat out of the bag all at once. Buy now or buy later, I guess it doesnt matter cuz it will be old news by 2007 or early 2008. I guess you should wait unless you are really hurting right now.

I would also like to know.

Would getting AM2 around summer of this year be a good idea? Because I'd like to get a head start on next-gen technology because I can't upgrade as often as I'd like to.

intel put those chips out to fill the gaps in the next few months until there real compeditor is ready - Intel Conroe - dont bother with P4/netburst, wait for Conroe if you want intel and can wait, or otherwise right now get an A64 system.

Yes! I have been waiting for a topic like this to tell everybody what I know! (Yes! I know that sounds arrogant! But bear with me! It will be worth it!, I hope 😉).

Your best bet, if you want to upgrade your PC, is to get it now. I say this because when the M2's come out in a few months, the prices of them will be extravigent to no end, and that doesn't necessarily mean the 939's will drop in price. If you were to spend money for a new rig I would suggest an AMD Athlon 64 4400+ and an SLI or CF of cards of your choice (at least 2 78GT's) and 2GB of RAM. I say this because with the new Dual-Core patches released for games, you don't need 2 3Ghz CPU's to run frames of over 100 on games like Quake 4 at Ultra High.

The performance benefit of DDR2 will be great, people can try and doubt this, but I recommend you don't. Only reason I suggest getting a comp now is because of the prices of the new systems, going to be outrageous. I just bought a 3700+ and an SLI of 6800GS's and I'm pullin 40+frames on absolute max settings on all games (COD2, FEAR, QUAKE 4) and I paid a mere $900 for this and it is quite well. But, if you want to upgrade the best and not again for years, wait til Summer for M2's, get a 5000+ AMD X2 and a x1800XT CrossFire, and you're golden for years.

why would you buy an x2 4400 for ~450 when you're more or less certainly guaranteed at least a 2.2g oc on an opty 165 for 100 dollars less?

at least 2 78GTs? uh... you might as well get a single GTX or a 1900series

the only advice i'd agree with is 2x1gb ram

I forgot that Presler is just a filler...Conroe's the real shizzle. I'm still siding with AMD, fight the power!!!
I agree I'm picking up a 165 and maybe a single GTX or x1900.
Buying everything next month, hope prices go down or availability goes up atleast.

I too actually agree with you on AMD - i mean seriously, even if they (Intel) do create a faster cpu, its going to be expensive as hell (i bet the first conroe will be a EE (extreme(emergency) edition) and at an EE (extremely expensive) price, and in the end AMD might be a tad slower, but at a more sane price compared (10% slower, 50% cheaper), and even if Intels are at a decent price, there boards will have some sort of issue with the new cpus that will make it a better idea to wait for later boards (eg Pentium D's - first boards all died in THG labs even if they "support pentium D").

I remember when a celeron 1700 was the same price as an AMD Athlon XP 1800 here in Australia, altho you might have to pay the extra to cool the dam thing, and the celeron wasnt exactly a great overclocker either.

Well I wouldn't say 50% cheaper 😛
Not by today's standards
But definitely cheaper (compare Intel EE and FX-60)
But ya, AMD appeals to the market better, lower priced highly customizable and efficient products.
Can't go wrong with AMD, but you can go big with Intel.

Well... you can do several things when AM2 launches:

a, Buy the Core Duo T2700 which might have some tweaks besides the higher clock speed
b, Get a cheap Presler or, if you feel big, the EE 955
c, Grab one of the Conroe EEs @ 3.33 GHz which will outperform current CPUs by about... lets say 100% =)
d, Buy a S939 System when theyve dropped a bit in price

But one thing you should not do under any circumstances is to actually buy an AM2 CPU. Trust me, youre better off with some S939 stuff compared to AM2.

I think I'm going to stick with s939...tried and true.
As long as it can keep up with games for atleast 2 years I'll be OK.
By then I'll just swap out my mobo/CPU/RAM for something else and give the old stuff to my bro's computer (ha-ha  )
It's gonna take a while to get the kinks out of the new tech anyways.
Look at the progression from AMD Althon XPs to 64s. I had one of those back in the day, ran at like 70 degrees celsius and eventually imploded on me (reminds me of prescotts :O). Now they're running so efficienty and cool. Altho AMD has come a long way and doubt they'll screw it up.
Intel on the other hand, HAS TO produce an awesome chip or they'll just fall behind AMD even more. Damn computers, full of decisions 🙁

i mean seriously, even if they (Intel) do create a faster cpu, its going to be expensive as hell
I don't know why you would think that. The Core Duo, which Conroe is based on, was introduced as a line replacement to Dothan. The 2.16GHz Yonah replaces the 2.26GHz, 2GHz replaces the 2.13GHz, etc. As such the prices have not risen for the newer cores and the performance is substantially increased.

In fact, the latest tests show that Yonah is just as efficient as Dothan in Integer calculations, but is 20% more efficient than Dothan in FP.

Int is almost perfectly inline with Dothan and is about the same as a 2.4-2.6Ghz Opteron. FP is about 20% above Dothan but only the equivalent of 1.8-2.0 Ghz Opteron.
This is a great starting point for Conroe performance-wise.

Pentium D's - first boards all died in THG labs even if they "support pentium D").
You forget that the boards that failed were nVidia motherboards. Those were released before the final specifications for the Pentium D were set so of course they wouldn't be compatible. I believe most of them just needed a BIOS update. The i945 and i955 boards that were released at the same time as the 8xx series performed fine. Price-wise, the chipsets coming out in time with Conroe may actually be cheaper as Intel transitions from 130nm to 90nm and 200mm wafers to 300mm wafers cutting their costs by more than half.

Despite, what I said above, if you really do need a new computer there is no reason to wait for AM2 or Conroe. There will no doubt be a performance increase, but it won't be very substantial for real-world average usage. In such a case, current AMD processors are a good choice.

Thanks for the response. I think I'm gonna wait for AM2, since I have no source of income and my parents are going to pay for my rig.
