Hi all in desperate need of help.

I have a Mac about three years old. Worked fine. Did a check using onyx which I use it said I need to restart and boot using disk utility. So I did. Ran first aid on everything. All fine except my Macintosh hd which it said failed to fix. I then tried booting as normal and it is crashing half way through startup. Looked up solutions and it says you need to try booting using the installation disk which I don't have as it was supplied through my uni course (they never gave me a cd) please help!

Sounds as if your hard drive may be failing (or at least is corrupted). On a Mac of that age you should be able to boot from the Recovery Partition or the Internet.

I tried booting from Internet but luck, have spoken with apple and they said I'd need an empty ext. hard drive to backup computer on to then re format Mac, if that doesn't work it's the hard drive they said which they said is the likely answer from everything I've done. Will let you know if the backup works
