I have the P5W DH Deluxe, it's a GREAT motherboard but it's geared towards those wanting to use Crossfire (Dual ATi graphics cards) thus utterly useless for you.

That's why I've listed the Asus P5B and the Gigabyte DS3, both are VERY good boards yet more cost effective.

Spend the extra money on RAM, maybe even get 2GB of RAM. You won't regret getting 2GB if you're planning on gaming and using Windows VISTA (coming out 1Q2007).

O RLY?
Wonder what single channel vs dual channel affords in terms of a perf hit...

Well, let's just say you don't want to find out. When a processor is built to make use of 8.5GB/s and you're giving it access to 4.2GB/s let's just say the results are not too promissing. It's like using SDRAM on a Pentium 4 basically.

The only reason I'd want to know is if I want to get 4GB of RAM in my system, but want to save a bit of money by getting a 1GB stick now, then wait for the price of ddr2 to drop.

imma go with asus.. this computer is for my friend ( the computer i build, which im on, is running on an ABIT NFG-7 w/ AMD Duron 2.0 ghz - i know cheesy) and he said he likes asus or abit so i chose asus cuz i wanna work with something new. anywayz, heres my choice

-Asus P5B-E SOCKET T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Mobo
-A-DATA VITESTA 1GB ( 2 X 512 MB) DDR2 PC5300 Dual Channel Kit
-Hard drive im gonna keep for now

Well that's better.. but I would pay the extra $5 for the 7200.10. Way better performance for $5.

EDIT: Hard drive not free; sucks.

Need Comments on if i made this choice
-Asus P5LD2 Deluxe Wifi-TV Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard / Audio / PCI Express / WiFi / TV Tuner / SLI / Gigabit LAN / S/PDIF / USB 2.0 & Firewire / Serial ATA / RAID
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz / 2MB Cache / 1066MHz FSB / Dual-Core / Socket 775 / Processor with Fan

and wats the max i can overclock the cpu if i get this

EDIT 2: TURNS OUT MOBO is gone :'(

I would avoid (if your going to build right now) the P5W DH deluxe. It got high marks form THG, but they also noted it had some problems.

I have a great deal of respect for ASUS, and would say (IMO only) that they make one of the most reliable mobos out there, but I have the P5W DH deluxe with a E6600 and have also had some problems. I havent finished resolving the problems yet, and most of them seem to be component software (driver) related.

Elmo stated it's a great mobo, and I agree, but it still seems to need some ironing out for use with the C2D and with various hardware configurations.

I concur with Elmo about the RAM and video cards

Hmmmm, up-to-date info is v imptt in comp industry.

Definitely AMD X2s are better than the Intel Pentium Ds. And worse than the Intel C2Ds. Very few people now remember that P4 or other NetBursts ever existed :).

Anyhow I'm lots confused about this torque and horsepower issue. IMHO we should start a thread about it (in Community -> Other section maybe?) so we don't mess up in the CPUs section (the poster didn't ask abt hp or torque naa). I'll do it in 1-2 days.

that horsepower/torque is an analogy to cpu speeds... and heres my final choices on the mobo and cpu comment and suggest things as you like:
-ASUS P5B-E Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor
-OCZ Gold 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Comments and Suggestions plz

the only one I don't recommend is the P5B Basic: it lacks memory voltages of >2.1V, has the craptacular ICH8 (no NCQ!!), and the Gigabyte 965P-(D)S3 is much better for the price.

The P5B-Deluxe Wifi is kinda also a gimmick, wireless via USB adapters is a lot better, in terms of reception (At least, when you're really far from the AP, this matters). P5B Deluxe is $200 on the Egg, and P5W DH is $270.

I thought the P5B-E (Rev. 1.02G) was a solid board... it also overclocks like a bat out of hell. I'm not sure whether the P5B-E at NewEgg is the 1.01G revision (which is also limited to a 2.1V Vdimm), but if in doubt, fork out a little more for the P5B Deluxe.

Looks like an excellent setup. I'm glad you changed from E6400 + P5W DH (motherboard costing as much as CPU??) to this one with the E6600, which is much easier to overclock past 3GHz with its 9x multiplier.

I do use a P5W DH but realize it is not a cheap board - it comes with all sorts of accessories like a remote control which can power down the system. The overclocking knowledge for this board is also extensive, and I know why THG couldn't get it past 330 FSB while more recently people have been reaching 370+ FSB with stock voltage. However, I do notice it takes abnormally long to detect drives and start booting - not an issue for me as I run it 24/7, but 15-30s additional boot time is a nuisance to many.

I can't compare with the other Asus boards as I don't own them. Review sites find the P5W DH with a hairline performance advantage over other boards, but honestly I think that's because this board is aggressive with FSB - e.g., clocking 266.7MHz when you specify 266.

dasicknija is right. clockspeed of a cpu inst everything.

its like horsepower ratings in cars.

horsepower is figured by torque multiplied times rpm

please elaborate that.
How much bhp does my car have? It has 240Nm torque at 1800RPM?
clue> it has 105bhp, and I can't fit that into the calculation... ?

cheers!

The problem you might have in OC. Will most likely be with your ram not OCing well. You might want to look at getting the C2D 6300 instead of the 6600. You will be saving alot going that route and since you are not going all out with the system a 6300 will do the job just as well and save you money. As for the motherboard it should be a good one not sure about its OC abilities or features but Asus makes an overall good board.
