Making an add'l disk r/w under xp

I've taken the hard drive from an windows/2000 system and
installed as an additonal drive on a new machine under
XP. I have tried the jumpers as "cable select" and
as "slave". In both cases the drive is accesible and I
can read the files. In neither case can I write to the
device. If I reformat the device under xp will I get
write access to it?

You just need to give yourself full control of the drive. Boot into
Safe Mode, right click on the second drive, click Properties, and take
ownership/full control of the drive.
