Making new partitions

I bought a new laptop and there is anew problem, the hard is 320g and when i started the lap there were only 2 partitions: c(about 300g with the vista on it) & d(named recovery 11g). now i want to make more partitions but i'm afraid if i made it from the start up i'll loose the windows. can you tell me how to do it?????
