Making your own subtitles??

I can see lots of guides that tell you how to rip subtitles if you are
ripping DVDs, but no-one seems to cover how you can actually create and
place your own orogonal subtitles.

Anyone had any expereince?

Several authoring program offer this.

For one I use Adobe Encore which can handle subtitles and offers a menu
selectable choice of 16 languages. You can type your subtitle in a window or
import scripts which are very easy to create in any text editor provided it
can be saved in the correct format that Encore accepts. Formats are
mentioned in the manual. The only thing is to keep track of the various
audio and subtitle tracks.

Well, the process really depends on your authoring software. Hardly
any authoring apps support subtitles, let alone have any decent
support. Ive done it using SubStation Alpha to time and MaestroSBT to
genetate the subtitles for both Scenatist and DVDMaestro. It can be a
headache at times, but I came out with really good subtitles.

ReelDVD looked like it had ok support for subtitles, but I couldnt get
the DVDMaestro Scenarist script to load and Id be damned If I was
going to bother trying to write out my own script... and Encore could
load a text script created by MaestroSBT I believe, but with no
formatting, positing, or colors kept. Screw that!

Yes, if you use windows there is a program SubstationAlpha (subtitle editor),
use that and Virtualdub + subtitle filter to make an AVI.
..ssa files can be used but I dunno if you want to go DVD in windows.


In Linux see my subtitle editor xste,

That will work with either transcode for DivX, or mjpegtools for mpeg2
or submux-dvd and all the other tools, see the links on my page.

The thought of Anonymous cajoles my mind into reminiscing about the
smell of poppy seeds and the image of morning dew making
rec.video.desktop glint in the crisp autumn rays of a mature sun.

I had a look at the manual to Scenartist, and it appears to use
overlaying bitmaps, with the script stating the bitmap, it's start time
and finish time. That looks like the kinda subtitles used on the R1
Lord of the Rings trilogy, rather than player generated text, which was
my thought process.

utility called Maestro SBT to generate the actual bitmaps. This only
works for DVD subtitles, though. You didn't say if you wanted to have
them "burned into" the video or not.

I see they make a utility called Substation Workshop now, alpha is
defunct..

No, I'd only have them optional, but It would be nice to avoid player
generated titles.

But the DVD player doesn't generate the subtitles.
