I have an ASUS V7100 and downloaded the

NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-1512.i386.rpm
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1512.mdk80up.i386.rpm

I followed the instructions about changing driver NV to NVIDIA
and adding 'Load GLX' - (said to make sure that it was there....it wasn't each time I installed the driver....could be sign that something didn't work ?)

Anyway, I tried to run the SIN demo that came with the distro and change to default OpenGL and bang......back to the desktop. Any ideas ? I read that with my board that AGP was x2 as some sort of work around....does this mean I have to change AGP setting in the BIOS, or will it dumy down to x2 automaticly ?

Thanks,

Just making sure you did the rpm -Uvh deal on the rpms...

I had problems installing the drivers as well. I just let it go, but I'm gonna try again soon. I sorta screwed up my kernel bad, and am gonna do a reinstall once 8.1 gets out of beta.

-Uvh ?
Didn't see anything about that in instructions......
I am a Newbie at Linux so don't asume I know ANYTHING....LOL

Hey NialM...Can I recommend that you get <i>Running Linux</i> from O'Reilly? It explains a lot of this stuff and has a whole section on When Bad Stuff Happens. I think you'd really like it and it would be helpful. Its only 40 bucks and it covers EVERYTHING (except Gnome), and I mean EVERYTHING (Including rpms....) But I'd just like to say that I admire your tenacity in fighting these problems you're having and wish you the best of luck. (BTW... try "man rpm")

Well.........thanks very much for your kind words and support :O)

I will look for the book you suggest. I have had a PC sence the first 8088's became "affordable" (don't ask me what I paid for it!) . I build and trouble shoot all the time. But with Linux, its like I am starting all over again !

Oh well, this first few weeks I have learned alot, and I do like this OS more then windoze all ready. Alot prob. has to do with the fact that it is NOT windoze !!!

Anyway, thanks for your input all !

Yeah, you have to install the rpms in order for the drivers to work. It's basically like taking a .zip file and downloading it to your computer, and hoping your vid card will work from that.

type:

rpm -Uvh nvidia(whatever the rpm name is).i386.rpm

Do this for both rpms and you'll have them installed.

I'll give you a few awesome tips here that took me a while to figure out when I was learning linux (I still am actually hehe).

If you get a source rpm, ie, something.src.rpm, you can compile it for your computer specifically by typing:

rpm --rebuild something.src.rpm

It will rebuild the rpm and compile it for your system. It will be placed in a certain directory (I can't remember specifically which one, but I think it's /usr/local/rpm/RPMS/i586. It may be i686 or i386 depending on a few things). You'll then have a something.i586.rpm file which you can then perform the rpm -Uvh something.i586.rpm command on to install.

nialm,

Red Zealot did recommend what i as well consider the best book for linux in the market. But i would also like to suggest you to use www.linuxdoc.org
You will find all you need there and i honestly belive that all the topics you could ever wish have been dealt with on the page.

The other best resource out there for Linux are the newsgroups and the IRC channels.. I suggest Dalnet #linux (I usually help there)

Good luck with the best OS there is :)
And btw you should give SuSE a twirl i think you would really like it.
