[SOLVED] Massive stutters in CPU heavy games

So last year i bought an i7 7700k.
in recent months ive been experiencing huge stutters while playing CPU heavy games, started out in Battlefield V. and has been happening now in Hunt Showdown.
Also happens in less intensive games if i am streaming at the same time.

Cannot find anything similar online.
The game will run absolutely flawlessly for the first hour that im on, and then the stutters start to occur every 60 seconds or so.
Temps sit around 70-85 at full load

If you are sustaining loads that are taking your CPU to 85°C, then it is at least possible you are overheating the VRMs and experiencing VRM throttling, especially if you have a lower end board.

Hard to say since you don't list the board model. The H60 isn't a particularly capable cooler to begin with, and those temps indicate a problem. Without an overclock you should never see temps above maybe 75°C, MAX, while gaming. I'd double check the seating on the water block and revisit the fan curve for the radiator as well. One problem with lower end board models is that when you go to an AIO cooler you completely eliminate the residual airflow over the VRMs that an air cooler provides, so without extremely good case cooling (And sometimes...
Stuttering is usually caused by a momentary shortage of cpu resources.


I don't agree. At least not wholeheartedly in every case. There are a lot of things that could be construed as "stuttering". Plus, stuttering caused by a shortage of CPU resources is likely to be a problem that is experienced at any point in a game, from beginning to end, if there is high enough demand and cannot be met sufficiently by the hardware. It's not going to suddenly after working fine for an hour, consistently, time after time, start stuttering due to a lack of CPU performance because at the hour mark it suddenly doesn't have enough CPU.

I'm am almost 100% certain that the time component is a VERY important factor here. Either there is something configured on your router that degrades performance after an hour, something begins running in the background after an hour (Like degragmenter, windows updates, system cleanup, SOMETHING, and I'd check for and turn off the automatic behavior of ALL those features and do them manually when you are not in the middle of other things), an infection or a thermal condition or hardware that is beginning to thermally fatigue and after an hour of use begins to show it by slowing down and getting wonky.

I'd download HWinfo, install it, run it and choose the "sensors only" option and then monitor all the hardware thermals such as graphics card, motherboard sensors, DRIVE thermals if they are shown, etc. Also look for any strange core behaviors such as, while gaming at the hour mark or whenever it begins to goof up, cores that suddenly drop usage levels or core temps that exceed thermal specs.

What is your CPU cooler model?

Post screenshots of the HWinfo sensors while at idle, while under a load, AND while under a load at the time that they start tanking and stuttering.

Monitoring software

HWmonitor, Open hardware monitor, Realtemp, Speccy, Speedfan, Windows utilities, CPU-Z, NZXT CAM and most of the bundled motherboard utilities are often not the best choice as they are not always accurate. Some are actually grossly inaccurate, especially with certain chipsets or specific sensors that for whatever reason they tend to not like or work well with. I've found HWinfo or CoreTemp to be the MOST accurate with the broadest range of chipsets and sensors. They are also almost religiously kept up to date.

CoreTemp is great for just CPU thermals including core temps or distance to TJmax on older AMD platforms.

HWinfo is great for pretty much EVERYTHING, including CPU thermals, core loads, core temps, package temps, GPU sensors, HDD and SSD sensors, motherboard chipset and VRM sensor, all of it. When starting HWinfo after installation, always check the box next to "sensors only" and de-select the box next to "summary".


Run HWinfo and look at system voltages and other sensor readings.

Monitoring temperatures, core speeds, voltages, clock ratios and other reported sensor data can often help to pick out an issue right off the bat. HWinfo is a good way to get that data and in my experience tends to be more accurate than some of the other utilities available. CPU-Z, GPU-Z and Core Temp all have their uses but HWinfo tends to have it all laid out in a more convenient fashion so you can usually see what one sensor is reporting while looking at another instead of having to flip through various tabs that have specific groupings, plus, it is extremely rare for HWinfo to not report the correct sensor values under the correct sensor listings, or misreport other information. Utilities like HWmonitor, Openhardware monitor and Speccy, tend to COMMONLY misreport sensor data, or not report it at all.

After installation, run the utility and when asked, choose "sensors only". The other window options have some use but in most cases everything you need will be located in the sensors window. If you're taking screenshots to post for troubleshooting, it will most likely require taking three screenshots and scrolling down the sensors window between screenshots in order to capture them all.

It is most helpful if you can take a series of HWinfo screenshots at idle, after a cold boot to the desktop. Open HWinfo and wait for all of the Windows startup processes to complete. Usually about four or five minutes should be plenty. Take screenshots of all the HWinfo sensors.

Next, run something demanding like Prime95 version 26.6 or Heaven benchmark. Take another set of screenshots while either of those is running so we can see what the hardware is doing while under a load.
