Despite working in TV for years I am only just looking at getting some
editing software at home.

This suite looks pretty good and the price point is nice.

Can anyone offer any objective opinions?

many thanks.

Seems no one else is answering so I will. Yes, I am a Matrox Gold Reseller.
But, that has no bearing on my opinion of their products. I once sold
Pinnacle Systems products and routinely sold customers away from them in
favor of better options according to the customer's needs.

The Matrox RT.X10 and RT.X100 offer realtime full resolution video input and
output through the 1394 and analog sources - composite and S-Video. These
cards offer realtime output of your finished video project to the MPEG-2
file needed for DVD authoring directly from the timeline of Premiere. They
also offer simultaneous batch encoding to DVD, SVCD, VCD and web formats
with multiple resolutions.

Both cards support video output through DirectShow applications. For
instance when in Encore DVD preview playback can be seen on a television
monitor, a feature not offered by other hardware or software editing
options. In my opinion a pretty nice option to be able to see the placement
of titles, buttons and backgrounds of your DVD's before it is writing to
disc.

Outside of these features the cards offer realtime color correction,
realtime chroma keying, tons of 2D and 3D filters and transitions - which
you may not really need in real world editing, but do come in handy for
creating interesting titling sequences if nothing else. The plug-in for
Adobe Premiere is solid unlike some other competitor cards many here are
familiar with. All in all the RT.X10 is a nice setup for the price though we
don't sell that many of them here at Digital Video Solutions. The RT.X100
has been the more popular choice among buyers.

You can find these cards littered across the internet. There is a list of
approved dealers at the Matrox website. For the best in after purchase
technical support I suggest you only purchase from a Gold Reseller listed on
the Matrox website. You will find them listed geographically.

One other thing Larry, how good is the card at coping with slightly
unstable sources?

VHS etc.

With any hardware capture card there is some tolerance to unstable sources,
but don't expect total timebase correction. As normal I would suggest the
use of a good SVHS machine plus a timebase corrector for the best
performance with even more expensive cards than the RT.X100.
