I have a Toshiba Qosmio F25 with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-840S that somehow was no longer recognized as a removable drive. This link to MATS (Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services) worked great. It fixed the problem (one or more class-specific filter drivers were corrupt) and produced a nice report you can save/print.

This seems to address the filter problems mentioned in earlier posts without having to edit the registry. I use iTunes and this fix has not created any subsequent problems there either.

One tip: There are two troubleshooting options: Read a CD/DVD and Write a CD/DVD. I ended up having to do both steps to first recognize the drive and then be able to write to it. I also had to reboot after each step.

I still have no idea what corrupted the drivers.

Thanks deOmega, MATS is a good site.

same problem, reads dvds but no cd reading going on ........curse you i tunes, can some 1 help

got my hp vista 64 dvd drive replace on the end of the 2 year warrenty. plus other stuff on it. looks like the f!@##$s put a Matshita DVD RAM UJ-850S ATA Device dvd drive in my system. havent try burning after getting it back. then when i try this bs of not working but able to read dvds and burn cdrs. then i rmember long time ago you might had to select a dvd region before dvd work or burn. wasnt sure so i click on region 1. hate donig that bs drm crap. of course it did not work. so i did the delete reg as psoted in here on first page. in about 4 minutes i should know if this worked. in iraq i was able to burn over 800 dvdrs before it started to *** on me. used the 1st warrenty to get that fixed but didnt really burn much afterwards. right now using the latest nero to burn. okay it seems to have worked. going to test it now. work. thank you. and thank god army didnt have this site blocked.

you would think microsoft would added this fix to thier updates. unbelievable. im also guessing hp put this cheap defected device in my laptop as a fix.

i remember in iraq i did a reg trick on myn squad leaders toshiba laptop to fix his dvd problem. oh well.

thanks again.

OMG IT WORKED..HIS RESPONSE WORKS....
I HAVE A SONY VAIO ON VISTA HOMEPREMIUM
MY DVD/CD DRIVE COULD NOT READ DISKS
I FOLLOWED THE ADVICE PRECISELY
AT FIRST I HAD TO REALLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
IT DOES WORK! THANKS OTHA

Help please.
I purchased a toshiba tecra m3 and when I fired it up it wouldn't play a music cd. I contacted the people I bought it off and they said it should work so I tried it again and it worked.
Long story short it wouldn't burn cds on a cd-r so I bought some cdrw and managed to burn two or three cds. I thought I should burn the recovery disks and successfully burned the first of 6 and then of course it stopped burning. It wouldn't even read what I had already burned.
I found this forum and otha's instructions and followed them fine. Still didn't work.
I tried again thinking I had missed something but no and it still didn't work.
I tried again and found the lower filters but no upper or it could have been the other way around.

I deleted them and tried again but it still didn't work. I started going through the directories in the registry and found one with upper filters. It said pointing device and I knew as I hit the delete button I shouldn't do it.

Too late. When the machine rebooted the cursor shows itself but doesn't move with the mouse or the trackball or anything. I tried rebooting in safe mode but it won't. It goes into the safe mode options but after choosing one it starts up and asks me to click either administrator or owner but I can't as the cursor won't move. Even using the alt key or tab key does nothing to enable selection.

So I am stuffed. I have a cd with Knoppix linux on it that I have used on other machines to access the files on a stuffed windows machine but of course it's no good because the cd isn't being recognised.

It doesn't even make a good doorstop because it is too light.

Any ideas anyone please?

Another success using Othman's method. Running XP Pro sp2, then upgraded to SP3. Lost all optical drives (DVD, CD) on ATA. Edited registry as directed above, rebooted. Immediately restored all optical drives. Thanks so very much for your contribution Othman!

If you have a general program that promises to clean up your registry, try running that and see if that fixes the problem. It worked for me.

@otthman...checking out peoples reviews that your method works..i am going to be a total fan of yours as my matishta drive on vaio with win vista has been giving me problems for over a year now..and i used my pc for everything ..this problem has eaten like so many dvds and cds of mine..i am not a computer or tech buff but i will do whatever you have written..i hope there are not more potential dangers ..and i do everything the way u intend it to be.......thanks a ton man...rest i would log back in to this post if it wrks for me...i think it has worked for everybody who has tried it...so keeping my fingers crossed and would be trying this method today only..i just wasted one dvd a moment ago..was trying my luck..lol..thinking that its not the burner but the burning software giving me the problem but anyways i hopethis time it is the right fix i would be using..thanks man

dint work for me!!! cant figure out why??
please somebody let me know what is the problem exactly for my drive.
i have used a tons of softwares for burning...my dvd drive neither burns dvds nor cds..i mean literally nothing..whenever i start any burning or writing it encodes but then while burning after say a time of 20 min or so would eject the dvd or cd and would say burn failure...n then the next thing is data appears on dvd or cd when i explore it and plays on computer or laptop but not on any dvdplayer or cdplayer or mp3player ...i mean only plays on computer and no where else........what is the problem..and what would be the solution..
anybody please help me out..i have used evry type of media ..sony maxell verbatim..at the lowest possible speed..nothing is working out for me..used nero..covertx..clonedvd..windows..dvdflick..omg ..i dont even remember the names even..but the thing is it fails in the middle and says hardware problem..and if it is playing on the computer does it mean the data has been burnt on to the media??  :??: 🙁
i am sorry..but i am not a techie..so just doing hit n trials...please please all u people out there..the techies..help me out..let me know what the problem is.
PS..i dont know when the problem started but earlier it used to burn the dvds and cds mp3s evrything..give any format..and it used to burn..i used to enjoy every downloaded movie n music on my players

OK, so I followed the advice without creating a backup, and not only did it not fix the problem, but now I am having trouble with just about everything that creates sound on my computer. Anyway to reverse this procedure?

Hello Friends,

I am also facing similar problem.
I'v 'Toshiba Satellite Pro200' with "Windows Vista Basic OS" and "Matshita DVD RAM UJ-850S ATA Device" Drive.

Recently this drive stopped reading CD Data disk.
This perfectly works with any DVD(audio/video/data) and CD(Music/MP3 file).

But when inserting an data CD disk(containing software/photos/data) it shows the CD is blank, and ask me to write into CD (702 MB free ).

But those are the same CD's I have been working with sometime back, but now its not readable.

Please help me.

Cheers!!
Rahul

I have the same problem with my dvd-cd(rom) i.e error code 39 and i tried ur solution...
The driver is now said to be working correctly...
But still my dvd is not playing ...
can anyone solve my problem

I'm having a similar problem with my ASUS U56E. I have the Mashita DVD-RAM UJ8A2ASW drive but I'm experiencing the issue on Windows 7 Home Premium. I tried the registry fix that seems to be working for everyone but in Windows 7 I don't have the Upperfilter and Lowerfilter entries that everyone is editing.

I've tried new drivers, reinstalling to factory new setting, etc. but nothing works.

Please help.

I have been having an issue with my Acer and Matshita drive in Windows 7, and was pointed to this thread, where following the original complete instructions to delete both Registry entries appears to have solved my problem.

I am extremely grateful to those who took the time to find a solution, post it, and point me at it!
