Max memory for Toshiba Satellite C855-S5206 laptop

I just got a new Toshiba Satellite C855-S5206 laptop from Best Buy.
It came with 4GB and I want to load the max memory.

It was listed with a max memory of 8GB on both BestBuy.com and Toshiba.com.

I just ran the system check on Crucial.com and it says the max memory is 16GB

I know Win7 will handle this much memory but will the hardware for this laptop really access 16GB or will half of it be wasted?

Yes, crucial lists the max memory as 16GB. But according to Toshiba specs max it supports is 8GB which can be confirmed from the following link - http://support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=3437740&isFromTOCLink=false
Also the spec sheet mentions (at the end, in the accessories part "Memory Upgrade") that it supports single 8GB module, maybe that's the reason why crucial has gone ahead with the 16GB as max. I have not tested if two 8GB modules work together but crucial does that, so I think it may work or maybe not. But I do not recommend exceeding the manufacturer's max memory limit. And I do not think your laptop recognize more 8GB of memory but maybe with future BIOS upgrade that should be possible I believe. Hope that helps.
