I want to replace my e6600 with a new build but I am not current with all the CPU/GPU for gaming so I need some help here. I cannot reuse any of my old parts, giving that cpu to the kids.

My monitor is 22'' and runs a res of 1600by1000ish max.

I prefer to stay with Intel but can be convinced to AMD with good reason. I need everything but monitor/mouse/keyboard. I need OS as well because I am sick of Vista.

Should I consider some of the Newegg combo deals to save some money? Another question is do I really need a video card above a 5770 since my monitor isnt too high of rez? Thanks for any help I can get.

Ok couple suggestions.

Don't need a 860 for gaming. Anything above a i5-750 is not really needed as more threads provides no benefit in gaming.

Also, you really don't want to pair a great CPU with a mediocre mobo.

HSF wise, and trust me you don't wanna use the stock intel p55 fans,
the CM Hyper 212 plus, despite a small price hike, is still the best price/performance ratio (that's enough to cool a highly OC'ed CPU fine)

The PSU/optical is fine as long as you don't plan on xfire down the road.

HD wise, not sure what happened to the spinpoint f3 500gb, as they we're really worth it.
If you can't find those, stick with the seagate 7200.12's as they're almost as good.

No give or take a 100-200 dollars I am ok, thanks so much for the hard work. I am trying to process all your information right now by looking at it all. I am sure I will have some questions soon. If you had the money, would u get the i7?

Just for gaming, an i7 (860 or 920/930) isn't worth the extra money.

If you do a fair amount of other tasks that would use hyperthreading, like Photoshop or audio/video editing, then it might be worthwhile.

what about this response about that board?

Cons: Some cons that don't impact me, but considered before buying:
- Not designed for dual graphics card setup.
- Enabling SATA6G/USB3 cuts PCI-E x16 bandwidth by half.

Cuts my PCI-E bandwidth by half?

Lol, the company response is spot on.

Regarding the board being designed for a single graphics card; The P7P55D-E and P7P55D-E LE motherboards in this series do not have the PLX bridge as these boards are at a lower price point for users that will only use 1 graphics card. Enabling SATA 6G/USB 3 does not pose an issue as even the highest end GPU solutions do not saturate the x8 bus. If you are looking for a board in this series that allows for 2 graphics cards, that would be the P7P55D-E PRO and up.

Basically, NO it doesn't cut bandwidth in half. That is the single PCIEx2.0 slot board, which supports only 1 GPU. If you want xfire or SLI get the other board I mentioned.


SATA refers to the xfer speeds of data btwn the HD and MOBO. It's used for other stuff, but for 99% of people that's basically it.

What SATA 3.0 refers to is the newest revision of the industry standard increasing speed drastically. The old SATA 2 bandwidth had reached ti's limit with modern SSD drives.

USB 3.0 refers to the new stands in USB ports which allows greater power to devices and a much higher transfer speed. This makes transfering/backup of data onto external drives much easier.

Neither are critical, but are great for future proofing, and simply for the fact that everything will be on those 2 standards from now on.

Edit: Like how they use "boards at a lower price point" instead of just saying gigabyte =P

1600 Ram works just fine you need to change the bios settings to get it to work though.


As far as that Mobo goes you have a useless PCIE slot on there running a x4's. You wont want to Xfire with that board and if you not going to xfire at all you do not need a 2nd PCIE slot. Lastly with that board you are loosing out on the USB 3.0 and Sata 6.

Also, don't bother with newegg reviews, most of them are from idiots. Just look at the HD reviews.
Half the people complaining there buy a new OEM HD and complain it's not working. You ask them if they formatted it, they look at you like you're speaking Chinese or something.

Not too Shabby.

I dont know if you ordered or not but only things I would suggest is speding the extra 30 bucks on the Antec 300 Illusion case and possibly getting an Antec Earth Watts 650 or 750 PSU.


Either way everything should work out all right.
