Maximum monitor refresh rate stuck at 85hz from possible 165 (via DisplayPort 1.2)

Hello guys,

So I lost my original DisplayPort cable that came with my Asus PG279Q. I bought one online, which is a DisplayPort 1.2 - in theory capable to do 2560x1440 @144hz (maybe not 165hz, but 165hz brings a tad of input lag so I am fine @144hz.

Now the maximum resolution is 2560x1440 @85hz. Works only with 60 and 85hz. If I go higher, say 100, 120 or 144hz, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then reverts back to 85hz. I double checked, the cable is definitely DisplayPort 1.2.

What can I do now?

Build:
GPU: ASUS GTX 1080 Strix
Monitor: ASUS PG279Q
Motherboard: ASUS z170i Pro Gaming
CPU: i7 6700k
Ram: Corsair 32gb
Storage: Samsung 256gb NVMe, Samsung 1TB SSD

3m DisplayPort 1.2

Can I get a link of where you bought the cable?

Added to the description as well,

Nothing about the cable is off. I cross referenced it with other retailers. Could be a defective cable then at most. Have you tried lowering the resolution and seeing if the refresh rate options change?

Just to make sure we are on the same page, I can see the 85hz+ refresh rates, I can see 100, 120 and 144 - but when selecting it simply goes back to 85hz.

Also tried lowering the resolution and increasing the refresh rate - it doesn't work that way either, goes back.
Could it be that 3m is too long?

If lowering the resolution still doesn't allow the selection then I would try re-installing the drivers just incase something happened in the mean time. I assume you are using the Nvidia control panel to change the refresh rate. You can also do it through Windows as well and see if one or the other is just messed up.

Reinstalling the drivers with DDU in safemode solve exactly 0 problems 🙁
Tried changing it through both Nvidia control panel and windows - through windows it is bugged, shows that rate changed while in reality it is still 85, opening the settings again confirms it.
Tried running at lowest possible resolution, still cannot get higher than 85hz so it doesn't seem to be a bandwidth problem therefore probably not the cable?

The cable is most definitely 1.2, but is it a good quality cable - we don't know.
What is weird though, as I mentioned, is that under no resolution does it go higher than 85hz, there must be something more to it?

Checked that as well ... Nope, it is the right one.
