Maxtor One Touch

Hello,
I was using my drive just fine last night, & this morning it is telling me its empty & that it needs to be formatted. I have years of family history on this drive. What's going on here? If I format, will everything really be gone?
Please help!

Yes....formatting will erase everything on the drive.
