Media Computer CPU

The increasing noise of fans for faster CPUs has kept me relatively happy with a water cooled Duron 800. Now I am thinking about putting together a computer to use with an evolving media center. It needs to be quiter than the water cooler with its pump. THG recommendations in 3/11 How To mentions Celerons, but these are from the hot running and non-contollable P4 series. What about cooler chips and ones that can be set to run only as fast as required? It would seem that Athlons, PMs, maybe even Via chips might have a place in a media system since dead quiet is the first NECESSARY criteria. What experiehnce is there in true quiet short of $2000 fanless systems?

How about a mobile. Is an AMD 2500 enough? You could get something like that pretty silent with a few tricks.

A Rev E Athlon64 also runs pretty cool. Slap on a XP-90 and a 92mm SilenX fan. That would probably be as silent as it can get without going totally passive. (maybe a Pentium M?)

[Crashman]

Pentium M's are the coolest decent processors. VIA processors are only competitave with K6-III's, nothing modern.

You should be able to cool a Pentium M at lower sound levels than your hard drive produces.
