Hey Guys,

So I just picked up a GTX 760 and I'm having an issue with Metro 2033. I used Nvidia's GeForce Experience to optimize settings for the game hoping to fast track things and to get myself playing.

Anyways, the game runs really smoothly but every 5 seconds or so will choke up (not just video but sound too). The choke lasts for a half second or so but it's really annoying. Any idea what might be causing this?

The settings I'm using are:
Advanced DOF: off
Advanced PhysX: off
Anti-aliasing: 4x MSAA
DirectX: DX11
Quality: High
Resolution: 1980x1080
Tessellation: on
Texture filtering: AF4x (was set to AF 16x by geforce experience)

I understand that Metro 2033 is a hardware whore but I feel that my system should be more than sufficient to run this game at these settings. See my system specs in my signature for reference.

EDIT:
I've just discovered the benchmarking tool that comes with Metro 2033 and thought that it might produce some useful data. I tried it with DX9, DX10, and DX11; DX11 runs the best. I've also tried turning the detail level down, and turning anti-aliasing down to AAA, both of which seem to have no effect. I did 3 passes on DX11 with the above mentioned settings; here are the graphs. Notice that the chokes don't occur in the same places. Those little narrow dips are very noticeable but the several second valleys are, well, even more noticeable.

Thanks in advance,
Shayne

Well I returned the card and bought at PowerColor HD 7970 (for only $10 more! 😀). Unfortunately, the error persists still but it's WAY less noticeable. It's much more noticeable in the graph than in it is in the actual benchmark; still incredibly frustrating though!

Here's the benchmark with the HD 7970. It looks like if I want to completely eliminate the issue, my last resort will be to try reinstall windows. 🙁 I think for now I'll just give up, wait for the next game patch and cross my fingers. If the next patch doesn't fix anything, I guess I'll reinstall windows.

After running this test I thought that maybe the issue was that the game was installed on my HDD and not my SSD. So, I freed up some space on my SSD, moved the game over and cleared Steam's cache as to recognize the new install path. The issue persists. I don't think it's an issue with the game settings as I've tried, well, nearly all possibilities and I'm still having issues. Is it possible that I've got a bunk card? I mean it runs fine in WoW and Portal 2 with everything on Ultra.. WoW pulls 100+ FPS and keeps easily keeps its head above 30 FPS in 25 man raids or in super busy capitals. Aside from these 3 games I haven't tested the card. I'll download Metro: Last Light and see if I still have the same problem.

The chokes in metro 2033 are common, I get them too and i have a much much less powerful rig. Don't worry its not your GPU failing or anything. I've heard however that it may have something to do with the HDD not being fast enough for the game. Defrag it and see if that helps. I haven't tried it yet simply because the freezing/choking isn't all that apparent (Only happens once in a while)

I moved the game to my OCZ Vertex 4 which is a pretty speedy SSD and the issue still persists.I wish I could just ignore it but they're so frequent that the game is literally unplayable. Last night when I was playing it actually crashed at one point during one of the longer chokes. I'm not sure if this will help but here's the Windows Crash Report:

I found another guy on youtube with the same card as me and he doesn't seem to get the chokes at all! Of course I don't know what his other system specs are but I'm certain that my rig is more than up to par.

I'll go through my process list, disable one by one, and retest each time. This could take some time but I'll get back here with my results.

By the way, I downloaded Metro: Last Light and it's doing the same thing but it doesn't seem nearly as pronounced when watching.

Well, I stripped as many services as I could (following this guide and disabling nearly everything else non-essential). I also tried running it in Window's Diagnostic Mode. Although I must admit that the problem had ameliorated, it was still prevalent. I think I'm going to bring the card back this week and try something different :/

As a last ditch effort:

Thorough scan for viruses etc.

Did you update the game patches?

Update motherboard BIOS?

Try latest Nvidia drivers? Even go back one or two revs. Sometimes a new driver has problems like this.

Play the driver game. Pull out video card, delete driver. install driver. install board.

Clean up the Registry.

Fresh install of Windows.

I cleaned the registry with CCleaner, did fulls scans with avast, spybot, and malwarebytes. I have the latest drivers. I have not updated my BIOS, haven't rolled back drivers, and haven't tried a fresh install. A fresh windows install is kind of off limits for me as I've got about 900gb that would need backing up and only 16gb USB thumbdrive for backup lol. I'll try rolling back the drivers, do the card reinstall, and update my mobo's bios then get back here.

Well I do believe that I've tried it all. I tried all of your suggestions and still no avail. My cousin recommended that I disable the on-board graphics port, I tried disabling it in the BIOS and by installing VIRTU MVP and disabling the HD4000 GPU; unfortunately, neither functioned. He also recommended that I use a graphics benchmarking tool to see if it chokes there too. I ran a few tests in 3D Mark on both Cloud Gate and Fire Strike, in both tests I noticed that the frame rates drop drastically during the physics test which is odd considering that my 3570k should score decently, even though it is at stock clocks. I feel like I should be scoring much higher than this. Any ideas? Perhaps this is the cause of the problem?

Check out the results from 3D Mark:
