mic help please

My laptop mic only works when I plugin my headphones(has no mic) and it kinda bothers me.
does somebody know a fix? This bothers me because I have a combo jack and im trying to use a headset which has the single jacks(1 for mic and 1 for audio).

Right click the volume icon at the bottom right of your screen, click playback devices. Set the one you want as default and enable it
Click on the recording tab. Set which mic you want to hear all the time as default too.
Apply and exit.
