i love ubuntu's software center. the good part of it is that you can still install other stuff, be it by compiling it yourself or by downloading stuff. so cool. ubuntu ftw.

ok, so it does exit, but since microsoft with integrated it within the OS it will be a lot easier for everyday users to access it. see what i am trying to say. i just hope they don't screw it up like the way the zune app store is. half the time it never works.

ubuntu sucks since there are not as many developers and graphics for games is even worst than apple games.

It doesn't say it will be integrated with the OS anywhere.
There may be a shortcut to the website on a desktop, but that hardly counts as OS integration...

Also, this is even better, on Windows Marketplace there is a link at the bottom of the page directing people who want additional compatible software to (amongst others) Cnet, who, amazingly enough, run download.com

Oh gawd.... please.. no more "apps" we already have applications that run on Windows, like Microsoft Office, and firefox, and Crysis. The last thing I need is a bunch of mostly broken features that would normally be used for a phone.

Heck, my old Verizon Motorola phone had an app store that had actual applications and games 3 or 4 YEARS before Apple even had a phone. Apple's app store wasn't anything particularly new, they just polished it and put round corners on the buttons. Which is pretty much what they do, which is fine they make a decent living off doing that.

That said, I won't mind an app store, so long as I still have to choice to buy things outside of that app store and I'm not locked into it as my only source of software for the OS. I don't want and iPhone-esque app store that is my one and only source of software. Kind of like steam, I can still choose to go buy games at , I just usually choose steam because it's easy and, generally, pretty fast and cheap.

Sounds good to me as long as its not like Apple's store where only Steve Jobs can say what you can download.

To me it could be indifferent. I might go to that new app store, but only if two conditions are met - in general (and that goes to using windows in general):

1. We can keep installing applications from any site or distribution medium just as we do now.

2. Microsoft does not have any right whatsoever to remotely delete any software without my consent on a case by case basis (no pre-consents written in small legal letters).

That is, I don't want to be using an Apple disguised as an orange.

That's awesome... They're stealing the legendary Linux Package Manager... Except this one charges your credit card every time you use it, and the applications are all either uber-proprietary closed source, or else NSA-ware...

Of course, the best part of Windows 8 is the "cloud profile". We cyber-security types use something similar in the corporate world, everybody's home/profile is stored on a server. This accomplishes 2 things:

1. The user can have their settings and files from any machine on the network.
2. We can go through their files at anytime without them knowing it, we can monitor everything they do.

Needless to say, you can expect the NSA/FBI/CIA/DEA to regularly audit your Microsoft cloud profile.

An online App Store is always a good idea. At last Microsoft will have something of its own.

As an app builder/developer, I am thinking if previously Windows logo'd apps will get an advantage of publishing on the windows store before competition gets there. Read this post http://bit.ly/9pmFhi for more reference.

I think this a great opportunity for Microsoft to stay relevant in the current environment.
