[citation][nom]Vladislaus[/nom]Wasn't the Mach Kernel made to be used in the BSD UNIX?[/citation]

The kernel of OSX is not. Much of the rest of the system is based on BSD, but the kernel is Apple's even if it's similar to BSD. Technically, I think it's considered a Unix-like system, not a Unix system.

[citation][nom]molo9000[/nom]That's because the core of OS X is NOT(!) Unix. The kernel is even called "XNU" meaning "X is not Unix".OS X behaves like unix (hence the unix certification), but it doesn't use any unix code.[/citation]

Of course OS X contains Unix code. It's based on BSD. This is the kind of absurd comments I've come to expect from Apple haters.

Unlike other unix-like systems, OS X is unix certified and can therefore be called unix, but that doesn't mean it's directly related to Unix.
The core of OS X is based on parts of FreeBSD, NetBSD and the Mach kernel.
While ultimately "descended" from Unix, they have replaced all original unix code with open-source code, that is not copyrighted by whoever holds the rights to the original Unix system.

btw: Writing this on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.7.3

[citation][nom]Pherule[/nom]Oh.Incidentally, I'm still using Office 2000, because I find all newer versions inferior.[/citation]

You know what--I thought that too, until I used 2003 for more than a couple of minutes. I still prefer that to 2007, probably mostly because of familiarity... but even 2007/2010 are growing on me. :)

[citation][nom]atmos929[/nom]Mac OS X Service Pack 2 comming up... ... Do they even use updates like that? Will they have to?[/citation]

nah, they will put a "New" OSX. and force their users to buy it, instead of a free download.
but seriously, why don't people auto-update anyway???
maybe because they are using pirated software???

The Kernel of Mac OS X is based on the Mach Kernel with certain components from FreeBSD.

Apple has marketed their products to be so easy to use that any idiot could do it. The problem is, many do
