[citation][nom]ubergeek[/nom]MS flight sims have never been good as x-plane.www.x-plane.com[/citation]

X-Plane has its advantages, FSX had its own. Both are great flight simulators and if you're into this stuff you should really be using both.

The last truly epic Flight Simulator games (in MY opinion) were Dynamix's Aces over Europe and Aces of the Pacific games. Those were an absolute joy to play over and over and over again.

Never have I played a Flight Sim I really truly enjoyed ever since.

Those games mind you, played on 486 computer systems. It was a while ago...

I've just beaten WC1 and WC2 and their expansions, (and finished the last expansion mere moments ago) for the first time. I had played them when I was a kid, but never beat them. So next is to get WC3 to run, possibly by building/repairing a PIII computer with windows 98. I figure it should run fine natively.

[citation][nom]cknobman[/nom]Flight sims back in the day were my favorite games.IMO I think the market was largely ruined when the games became so damn complicated you had to be an actual fracking pilot to play one.Go back to some sort of intuitive system without over complicating things and this genre will thrive again. (and for everyone reading this dont start pointing out things like HAWX, they are fine but it would be nice to have a middle ground in between arcade and over the top ultra realistic you need to be a pilot to play).[/citation]

IMHO, the fact that the games are becoming more "complicated" makes them more realistic, which for me makes them that much better. This is after all a flight simulator, not some arcade style game. I had been playing MSFS since FS98 came out. The first time I flew a real cessna 172 last year (thanks to a friend with a pilot's license), I already knew what every single switch and control in the plane does and was able to fly the plane without needing to be told how. That's what I call realism!

P.S. FSX still has some way to go in being more realistic, because it does not simulate cabin pressurisation controls, and the APU fuel flow is not modeled (i.e. APU does not consume fuel in the sim).

microsoft flight simulator98 was the last one i even bothered to try, reason being is there are warbirds and then there are targets. i wish lucas arts would get on with making an updated x-wing vs. tie fighter with multiplayer intact, nothing like taking on a fleet with imperial/rebel fighters numbering as many as the stars with 16 of your buddies in somebodies basement/garage/deck. microsft combat flgith simulator and combat flight simulator 2.0 were fun. falcon 4.0 was pretty good once most of the bugs were patched (despite the f-15 interface). falcon 4 allied force was great also esp. with the 32 multiplayer capability. despite gunmetal being designed for consoles, i really liked it, i would love to see yeti studios design a robotech/macross multiplayer campaign similar to how they did gunmetal. that would revive flight sims and probably put flight simulators into direct competition with FPS again.

Plain and simple. Everyone either loves:
(1) FPS games like Halo, Call of Duty or Battlefield variants (where to a lesser extent have flight simulators, too along with other game elements)
(2) MMORPG games like WoW and Starcraft II
(3) Simulation games like Sims and Second Life
Flight Simulator games are too boring in comparison. Really, do you see people still playing Hangman on their computers? If flight simulators are going to ever become popular again, there has to be a war mode where you can shoot down plans, drop bombs and be your own kamikaze pilot.

Was going to get into flight simulators, but the cost of buying a joystick and the end benefits don't add up. There needs to be more out there, even fighting flight simulators. I mean seriously, why doesn't a company make one for the PC. Its the perfect platform for it.

I used to enjoy flight sims. I was even a Beta1 and Beta2 tester for Fly II. I used to enjoy racing sims on my PC too.
Unless you're really into war and battle FPS games (I finally got my fill with Battlefield 19whatever), PC gaming is dead these days. I'd have to upgrade this rig before I could even think about buying a processor hog like MS flight sims.

Are you guys seriously trying to compare a chicken with a fish, or dinosaur? They're not even in the same genus. I miss intelligent discussion in tech sites. The internet has gone to hell! 😉

Remember Red Baron? Thats the flight sim that hooked me. Red Baron 2 or Red Baron 3d depending on when you bought it, was the greatest. Playing multiplayer on won.net hahaha 56k dial up. Great times.

It's great to see some optimism here about the new title. In FS forums everybody is freaking out, worrying about what MS *might* do to our beloved series, "It's going to be aimed at the casual crowd!", "They're going to ruin it by putting it under the Windows LIVE brand!", "What about all the money I spent on FSX?!". The fact is MS have revealed nothing except that the game is in the works, so people can only speculate.

Thankfully it's not all doom and gloom, and not everyone takes it too seriously.

[citation][nom]JimmiG[/nom]I got into flight sims during the "golden era" of the late 90's, when we had Fly!, Pro Pilot, Flight Unlimited, Flight Simulator and X-Plane at the same time. Hopefully the new version of MSFS (sorry, MSF) will feature a more up to date graphics engine, better physics (lookup tables is so 1987) and incorporate more "gameplay" in the form of lessons, challenges and adventures. I was never a fan of flying a jet on auto pilot for 10 hours straight, but I did enjoy bush flying and flying older planes without any navigational aid, just a map, ruler and stop watch.[/citation]

Ditto.
