The augmented reality hardware, which starts at $3,500, isn't made for individual consumers.

That's an understatement.

They're moving the wrong direction, on pricing.

When (modern) VR was new, it was a little easier to understand Hololens' $2k pricetag. However, products like Oculus Quest show that designs with nearly Hololens 2-level capabilities can be sold for about 1/10 of its current price.
