When was the last time Apple did this? One of the biggest reasons i love windows (and respect linux)...not going to download it, because i wont be able to use it lol. Btw it just hit me, is the tiny odd looking start menu for this dev version only?

Why don`t they already drop 32 Bit ? ... every new PC out there has at least 4 GB of ram .. that`s 1 GB more than 32 bit can handle ...not to count all other improvements. So sad we have 64 bit for so long yet we cannot detach from the 32 bit 1995 era.

Installed. It looks OK, but it will be better if I had a touch screen. You can see it is made for it. Touch screen prices will start to drop soon as the demand picks up.

business, corporate, enterprise
there will always be a 32-bit market to ensure compatibility..

I've got the developer preview installed on a machine, and I hate it! The Start menu is Gone! When you click the Windows Logo you go straight to the METRO GUI start screen. The desktop is a bolt on appendage to the METRO GUI. You go there to run classic Windows apps...FAIL. The system is responsive, but not quick, you have to scroll a lot, and I get lost in the METRO screens, with no easy way to back except hitting the Windows key back to go back to the Start Screen. In Metro, there is no task bar to see/switch to other running applications...FAIL. Finally, the whole METRO GUI is just too simplistic. It's a complete waste of space on a 24" display, it was designed but 1366x768 laptops, and doesn't scale up....FAIL. Judge or yourself, but I don't like it.

[citation][nom]kuerbo[/nom]Guys,It won't work on VmWare 'til version 8. I installed without trouble using Virtual BoxYou can ge it from here: http://download.virtualbox.org/vir [...] 07-Win.exe[/citation]

i guess vmware was paying attention. they already upgraded vmware workstation to version 8. can't confirm if vmware player has been so stick with virtual box for a free option for now

i just got to play around with it after installing vmware 8 and it looks like the start menu has been replaced by the metro UI. i was looking in control panel and i don't see an option to use the old strt menu like windows 7. from the early look i think this is more for tablets then a PC environment but at leat the metro UI is a unique way of viewing programs now but many people will not like it.

[citation][nom]malmental[/nom]it's just too soon for 8 when 7 is still so strong and good..[/citation]
I tend to agree, brother. But then again, it will be 12-18 months before Win 8 goes out the door. Probably in line with next year's holiday season.

...I saw Santa installing Windows 8......

1. its a developer preview FAIL THER
2. the option to revert to the old start menu will be in the final FAIL THERE
3. the developer pervew allows you to choose any resolution that windows 7 allows you too soo add to the fact that you are a moron that doesn't know how to use anything gives you an EPIC FAIL :hello:

Enterprise needs mostly. Also to lessen the memory requirements for portable devices like phones and such.

My guess is we are seeing a rough preview of what the final product will be . Heck I bet that MS is not showing their hand entirely with this release, why should they, it gives things away to the competition.

My guess is that the final release will have a traditional desktop UI that is almost exactly like Win 7 including the start feature.

First off I had the resolution set correctly, I just don't like the new Metro (Playskool) GUI. The Metro screens waste my 24" display - they would be great on a tablet, not on a desktop. This whole 2 GUIs in one OS is going to be a nightmare for developers -like me. Finally, if no-one uses the Metro GUI, apps won't get developed for it, if apps don't get developed for it, Windows 8 tablets users will have nothing to run. Windows 8 tablets will only run Metro, not the classic Windows desktop. Microsoft if trying to leverage Windows in the tablet smartphone markets, but this is pretty weak leverage. You'll see for yourself soon enough.

aren't ARM processors in 32bit only? that might be why. Other then that, I don't know, I've been running x64 vista and then 7 for 3 years now and the only bad thing is that x64 versions don't support 16bit programs, which are used in many companies with old software. I guess they couldn't implement WoWoW :)

It would be great if you could run the metro UI windowed, in a corner of your screen.

You rushed without checking it has a standard mode that looks identical to windows 7 you can turn off the metro UI.
