It was so bad that I kept a spreadsheet of all the error codes and other details, but no pattern emerged. All the hardware diags checked out, including multiple passes of memtest86. It's not dirty power, either.

Right, I should of course had mentioned that unstability that appear just after an update is kind of an exception. Except that from a user perspective (your case), it isn't much you can do unless you manage to temporarily block any os updates ...Like I said, it's been completely stable for over a year. No re-install necessary!
