I truthfully don't understand the point of touch stuff? I mean it might be neat to move your pictures and such like they did in the minority report. Does it justify the prices these companies are fetching though for it?

Touch obviously isn't meant for the hardcore enthusiasts on this site who would never buy an all-in-one PC to begin with. It's meant for the average consumer who loves Apple touch products.

OK, imagination time, try and see a future iteration of the Kinect system used on Xbox used instead for the PC as in input. It detects the 5 points on the tips of your fingers so you dont have to actually touch it, an it allows more realistic manipulation similar to - you guessed it - Minority Report.
It isn't sci-fi, I have already seen it done on a limited basis with a modified Wii controller and a guy with coloured electrical tape on his fingertips.
This may not be exactly that but maybe that is the way it is going...

I have actually worked with the technology behind Minority Reports. It is a really awesome technology in which Kinect shares a small subset of its capabilities.

Having been in the industry since B/W screen (err green) technology is ever evolving to the next big thing. Every mis-step made today, is a accomplishment as to what is to come in the future. (Trial and Error)

Imagination time over, I will never be wildly waving my fingers where no finger has been waved before, Come on be serious, an office full of people flailing their arms about in front of their screens, Nope, I cant see it!!!

I still bet you I could do more faster with better productivity with the minute amount of movement of my right hand the few times it meeds to hold the mouse other than when i am using the wonders of keyboard shortcuts, than gesturing to get things done, that means moving my hands away from the keyboard.....simple!!

Yes this stuff for consoles and entertainment, Not core OS that the worlds productivity relies on, yes thats jobs to you and me, PC's in the workplace where we work and keep the economy going.

Leave apple to be all touchy hands on whilst the big boys get on with the job!!!

Oh, And my screen will be smudge free and my arms wont be tired from all the holding up and waving...

(actually i could see this going off in a big way in Japan, they do like some wierd stuff out there)

I my self have never liked the all in one concept. I just have too many problems with it, one of my first computers had this design. It was an old power mac performa 5260. My problem is what if something needs to be replaced like the display. And what if you want a bigger screen down the road, or a better video card/better dvd drive/ect.

I just cant stand the idea of a all in one. It stifles you when you want to make upgrades.

Forgot to say, If Microsoft were serious about changing the game, Full automated voice control over every OS aspect would be a better solution to the control problem they have dreamed up with touch!

Yeah, I am not a fan. Combine this with Microsoft's leaked "Why people like Apple", and it is easy to see what target audience they are going for here...definitely NOT the average THG reader, IMO.

I notice you always take the extreme of every situation. I've had touchscreens and I make sure to keep my hands clean using them and clean them about once a week and fingerprints aren't an issue as well.

And also, 'flailing'? I would bet Kinect would hardly get you anywhere if you're flailing, that's your own damn fault. Have you even seen Minority Report, or the actual technology that led to it being in a movie? Every movement is pretty concise.

Also, where the HELL do you even get the idea this is for business? It's almost as bad as all the people who look at the 48 core CPUs and say "Yeah, but most games are only optimized for dual core." If you're working in an office, THIS IS PROBABLY NOT FOR YOU. However, users at home often like to have an interesting experience that extends beyond just a mouse.

Eyuck! That thing is fugly!

And you would need a new one for Windows 9 (or whatever they call it) six months after you paid (some ungodly price) for this. Nope. No way.

Pass.. I like building my own machines.. The auto dimming sounds cool though. But I hate how everything is switching to touch.. A mind reading computer wouldn't make me stop using a mouth either.. My screen would be flooded with porn and I would lose my job.

I recently got a Lenovo S10-3T, which is a convertible netbook/tablet with a multi-touch screen. I was surprised to find that using your fingers is actually a really nice way to navigate and use the web. Move your finger up or down to scroll, flick left or right for forward/backward.

OK, let's wind that back by about 20 years

Ok Kelavarus, fair argument, my version is extreme and I agree Flailing will probably not get you anywhere, but I saw the image in my head, had a chuckle and had to share it!!

I dont want to clean my hands from natural oils and sweat every time I must touch my screen, heck I dont even want or feel the need to touch my screen, i have never felt the need to touch any screen surface ever and when I have had to it has never felt natural!

I have seen minority report, best bit is when he is chasing the eyeball about, and yes its precise, but you try that kind of movement for extended periods every day, nope, KB and Mouse is better..

I am not dissing the Technology, and do think its cool in an entertainment sense, but windows is more than entertainment, and thats where the focus should be..

Not making it loved more than the competition Apple (Who still have the small tiny market share as always with tons of profit from the high as pigs in sky prices)

Windows 8 should be clean focused fast safe and secure, not bouncy flouncy fun fun fun fun fun, that should be the side project, the extra add-ons the sizzel and pop when work is done.

Microsofts Bread and Butter is the Corporate world, end of!! There is no Microsoft without the Volume Licensing!

The real future of usability will come when I can sit in front of my PC or entertainment system and simply tell it what to do..Thats a better option than all the precise control I would need to make at my pc using arms and fingers and various other input control methods I would have to learn!

I work from Home, I am self employed, I support various businesses and personal Systems at the same time, I have a 6 core PC, and I game on it when I have finished work! I even have a weekly bash on the Wii with the rest of the family for fun times (and yes I flail wildly all over the place, you should see my golf swing)

Overall, the overall need by Microsoft to involve touch is a white elephant for almost all of the system licences they will sell, seriously, fewer than a percent or two of Windows licences will make it onto machines used solely for their touch capabilities.

Touch has been around for years, and it still has not taken off in a big way, I cant see that changing!
