Missing CD Drive

I use a Gateway laptop, and just now, when I was burning a CD, an error
message came up, indicating that the drive could not continue writing the
disc. When I looked for the drive in My Computer, it was gone completely. It
is absent there, as well as in Device Manager, and anywhere else I try to
look for it. The drive is still powered and tries to read new discs when they
are put in, but the computer doesn't recognize it. I haven't been able to
find anything in the BIOS that could fix it, and I don't want to try to
figure out how to open up my laptop to check the connection unless I have to.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately I doubt messing
with my registry values would do anything but cause
trouble (especially since I can't find the restore disc in
case I screwed up the registry). I come to the conclusion
that the page you suggested won't help because:
1. It involves the problem occurring after installing XP,
and this computer has always had XP.
2. The device driver can't be bad, or else it wouldn't
have worked in the first place.
3. That page suggests that there might be warning signs in
the device manager, but my drive doesn't show up in any
way, shape, or form in the Device Manager.
I appreciate your help, but unfortunately that one won't
work this time, but if you have any other suggestions I'd
really appreciate them.

Don't open the case. No connections should be so poorly made at the factory
that they'd slip off.

Reboot the Laptop and attempt to locate the CD.

If it is not viewable in devicemanager:
Start> RUN>
Type in 'devmgmt.msc'
Press 'OK'

Then you have a problem which is hardware related.

As your CD burnering app reported an error, it is possible that it has
failed. Yes, harware fails [aeroplanes only crash when the are flying].

Take the Laptop back to Gateway to investigate the problem and replace the
CD if necessary.

Haha, I've seen an airplane crash when it wasn't flying :)

Anyways, BAR brings up an excellent point. If you can't figure it out
fairly easily and this is still covered on warranty. Make Gateway take
care of it for you. You paid for their services when you bought the
computer. Sometimes they will even replace it with a better model if it
really is a bad peice of hardware 😉
