Question Missing files and folders ?

Hi All,

Have been working on some PC issues for ages now and doesn't seem to end. Had an old Dell XPS which came pre-built with Raid 0 ( I know that is a risk), I used it to store all photos, music and movies on around 2tb. Due to Raid 0 I picked up a third internal drive with 4TB which I used as a back up drive for redundancy. I also had a synology with Raid 1 backing up but I stopped using that a couple of years ago.

Anyway as far as I can work out the power hungry gpu in the Dell got so hot the fans seized and burned out. The gpu was then putting a lot of heat into the PC which started running very slowly and hanging all the time. Despite disk checks saying they were ok it got to the point that I could not start windows without the PC turning itself off.

I picked up a decent Dell Precision second hand to use as a replacement media server. Put in a better GPU and just now installed the 4TB backup drive.

Firstly when adding it the drive did not show up and the DVD drive does not show now either. In Disk management the DVD does show and the E: has been reserved for it, however it will not show up in Explorer. I ran memory diagnostics which then did find the 4tb backup drive and I thought all was good, however that drive is not showing any of the massive folders that were the whole point of the drive. Movies Library folder completely gone, photo library showing a single folder inside and Music library gone. Everything else seems to be there. Even the downloads folder is there with 50 or so movies.

I am running some error checking at the moment but I just cant see that a raid and backup drive would fail at the same time, also even if there was some disk corruption why would the entirety of the movie library be gone there was over 600 movies and series in that folder.

Any ideas?

Thanks

edit: error checking completed and no errors found

I have just noticed I have 3 folders titled found.xxx, in those I can find most of the movie library now some 640 odd which is great. Nothing of the several hundred albums that used to be there and the most important one of all no recovered photo folders.

I have run chkdsk and the drive reports no errors at all. I can't see why moving a non system drive from one PC to another would cause a file structure issue.

"found.xxx" is the result of chkdsk trying to "fix" things.

It found some data, and saved it as a whole series of small ASCII files.
They are no longer photos or mp3.

Was this data in the RAID 0?

It seems to get weirder by the minute. In found.002 there was a folder called dir0000.chk, when I saw that I presumed the contents would be toast but there were 583 video files all in full working order. I have copied them onto another drive to be safe but so far the samples I have tried all run fine.

This drive was not part of the Raid 0 that is why I don't get the issue, this was a 4tb WD back up drive, I copied everything from the Raid 0 to this drive every month or so (system files etc excluded it was four folders if I recall, movie, music, photo and video)

Photos and videos are all the family photos and camcorder videos going back 22 years. The back up drive also held the iphone photo backups. I believe I can recover a fair bit from the synology but not everything.

On the disk management it is disk 2
