modem makes mysterious ticking sound

I have recently installed a conceptronic 56k internal modem. When I'm not online, the modem makes a constantly ticking noise, which is driving me crazy. It ticks like a clock. Is there anybody who knows what is going on here and, more important, what can I do about it? I've installed the modem card under Windows 98 and according to Windows'device manager the modem has been installed correctly. Still, the ticking goes on and on. Help please?

Is the clicking coming from your speakers, or from the modem speaker?

In win 98, while on the internet, mine makes a click noise everytime I click on a new link. I'm wondering if it could be some setting or script on your machine to make the browser coninuously check some site or set of sites. If the clicking is coming from your speakers, maybe you should check it out.

Well, the ticking only occurs when I'm off-line. As soon as I'm on the internet, the ticking stops. When I'm off-line my pc ticks like a clock, terribly annoying!

Yeah that would annoy me too. OK I'll assume it's not due too thermal expansion or bad modem hardware design, and is coming from some speaker on your system, yes? If that is the case then it seems it almost has to be software related.

I still wonder if it is some software or something which keeps trying to log on, or check some online address somewhere. Try this: close out of tasks in the task manager except explorer and systray, and see if the problem goes away. If after you close some program it stops well then at least your one step closer to finding the problem.

All I can think of is making sure you have the latest drivers, and/or firmware for the modem. Sorry dude, I wish I could do something besides flopping around like a lamo here.

I simply got myself a new modem and the problem was solved. Later on I found out that the problem might have been caused by a small program called Intercent which registrates your internet costs, so your guess that the problem was caused by some program was right. So I've finally ended up with a pc that doesn't tick anymore. Thanks for your help.
