Modem working, multiple routers not working

I'm struggling with what is going on in my situation:

I can direct wire my modem (SB6121) to my laptop (HP Pavilion g6) and get a solid internet connection. My wifi connects via my router cheap TP-Link TL-WR841N, which by the way has worked almost flawlessly for 3-4 years. I'm able to connect after a reset and get 1mbps and then internet is eventually dropped all together. My service is 20mbps, which I am getting 20-22mpbs when hardwired.

I figured my router had gone bad so I bought a much nicer router, Netgear AC1900 R700 Nighthawk.

When I set that up, I get the exact same situation. I can connect initially after a reset of all components (modem, router, PC) but I get extremely slow speeds, when sitting right next to the router, which eventually stops internet all together.

I've spoken through this with my ISP, who says there are no issues they can identify, and the ARRIS tech who tells me if the modem is getting internet then it has to be the router.

I'm just skeptical because I've had this router that worked fine for a long time, then get a nicer newer one, which is having the exact same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going on?

Solution
since you are saying that your new router is facing the same problem...it could be because of a severe interference nearby the router....perhaps you could try connecting to the 5ghz network ( 802.11 ac ) and see if the issue still continues

Sorry I should have specified. The speed and connection issues are the same on multiple laptops and smartphones. So I was thinking that was not the issue. I only had the one laptop with the ability to hardwire in ethernet though.
