I am trying to use the modem for the first time on a
Toshiba laptop (Satellite Pro). I keep getting an error
680 message. The modem is properly connected to the wall
jack.
I see that the modem is assigned COM3. In device manger,
there is no COM3 port, only COM1.
Do I need to 'Add Hardware' COM3? And if so, when I go
to 'Add Hardware' the computer automatically installs COM4.
How can I force a COM3 addition? And, will this solve the
problem???

Thank You.

I am having the same problem with a Gateway 600YGR. I
thought it was a problem with the modem, and installed a
PCMCIA modem from US Robotics - and it gives the same
error.
So, I then formatted the HD and installed XP Fresh and
STILL have the same problem.
Any Ideas?
