Question Modifying Cable Extensions

Hi all,

I recently bought a set of cable extensions from AsiaHorse not realizing that a normal 8 pin PCIe cable wouldnt fit into my CPU's 8 pin port because there is a little piece of plastic on the extension cable which fits into a specially keyed slot on a gpu, but causes it to be unable to be inserted into the motherboard. I am using an x570 motherboard, so the cpu requires both an 8 pin and a 4 pin. Since I have one extra 8 pin PCIe extension, I was wondering if it would be safe to shave off the piece of plastic that prevents it from being plugged into my motherboard. I figured that this would be ok because my power supply (Corsair RM650) has the correct cable for the motherboard, so it will be sending the correct amount of power. Is there any reason this would not be ok?

Thanks,

I would not recommend it. The PCIe pinout and the EPS12V pinouts are different. You PROBABLY can run with just the 8 pin CPU power plug depending on the CPU and amount of overclocking you attempt.

I just want to make sure youre understanding my question. Since I will only be modifying the extension cables, not the PSU cables, the 8 pin CPU power plug will still be connected to the EPS12V pinout on the PSU. The only unorthodox thing about the setup im suggesting is that i would have to modify the extension cables so that they will plug into the motherboard. In my mind there shouldnt be anything special about the specific cable extension wires, so since the motherboard and the psu on either end are both matching, it shouldnt matter.

You would also have to carve on the PSU cable, since the EPS12V shouldn't plug into a PCIe extension. In addition to the PCIe extension not plugging into the motherboard.
You probably could have ordered the correct extension in the time that has elapsed while discussing this.
