Monitor connected to laptop

Hello,
I was given an old ViewSonic monitor to use with my laptop whose screen was crushed. Bought 15 pin cable thinking all I would have to do is plug them together and I'd be off and running. Not...blue box in center of monitor screen says No Signal, Analog?? What do I need to do that I'm not doing. Thx.

You may have to press an alternate function key on your laptop's keyboard to force the signal to your monitor. many laptops have it like Fn + F6 or Ctrl + F6 or some variation like that. Usually there are three modes, 1. laptop monitor only, 2. external monitor only, 3. laptop + external monitor

Some laptops will not work without the laptop panel attached, or the crushed screen may be shorting something in the video circuitry.
