I've recently purchase a new gaming computer and would now like to look at a new monitor. Currently im using an acer 1366x768 18.5" monitor and a gtx 570 GPU. I've been pondering over the 20" monitors and the 21.5' monitors. My real question is, do games look better on resolutions like 1920x1080p on a 21.5" then they do on a 1600x900" 20" monitor considering they have equal contrast, response time and all that extra jazz? I've always thought they would look the same since the extra pixles are there because of the larger screen, but my friend is trying to convince me otherwise.

Solution
Divide the pixels by distance to get the pixels per inch. More ppi gives a sharper image.

Hd movies play best on 1080

Icons on your desktop look smaller at higher ppi

It doesn't matter the size of the monitor, the higher the resolution is the better the image quality - so of course the 1080p one will be the best pick.

So i figured out the math, and the PPI on the 1600x900 is about 10 less then on a 1080p 21.5' monitor. So now my question is, will i see the difference? how noticble is the 10 ppi change? i figure not a whole lot, seeing as how the 1600x900 has abouT the same ppi as a 1080p 24".

You can see the difference if you get close enough to the monitor. If you sit at ~2ft from it you can't see that much, and from more than 5ft it's unnoticeable (considering they have all equal specifications like you said).

The main difference is really the size of the monitor here. I personally think the image looks cooler on bigger monitors, but it's up to you :)

yeah, you will probably notice 10ppi difference. its not huge but it adds up over a whole monitor. also figure that quite alot of content is 1080p nowdays which looks best on a 1920x1080 monitor.

now is it worth upgrading? only if you were planning to upgrade anyways. its not going to change your computing experience much, but it is a gain. everything depends on how much it is worth to you.
