Hi all,

I've got a 2560x1440 165hz 27inch monitor (Samsung Odssey 52a) and a gtx1070 connected via a DP 1.2. Every time I try to change the resolution to something other than 60hz, I get the message "Not Optimum Mode Recommended Mode 2560x1440 165hz".

Things I've tried:

Changing it in display settings and advanced display settings

Changing it in NVIDIA settings

I can't change it via the monitor as it's greyed out since it's supposed to be controlled by the PC

Uninstalling and reinstalling NVIDIA drivers

Turning off G-Sync

Turning off image scaling

New DP cable and port on the pc

HDMI works but capped at 60hz

I saw somewhere in the manual that I cant change refresh rate if adaptive sync is on on the monitor but when I turn it off, the screen just turns black

I'm not sure what else to do.

Thanks!

So the top few options including refresh rate is greyed out yeah? What version DP is it set to in monitor? There's gotta be a reason why those options are greyed out and how to get them, some setting in the monitor i suspect. I'll have a look at manual soon.

DP set to 1.2, I believe it says somewhere in the manual that it's greyed out if it's supposed to be set by the PC.

Not making much sense of the manual either.

Could you upload screen shots of what the monitor menus look like, im trying to imagine it and videos on youtube aren't really helping.

What happens when you set resolution/hz and it says Not Optimum Mode Recommended, what happens next? just reverts back to previous setting?

So the screen stays black when you turn off adaptive sync?

This is G7 model but think menu settings might be similar. From 1:15 he shows what happens when adaptive sync is turned off. It takes a little bit. I'm guessing it remains black indefinitely until you turn it back on in monitor? With adaptive sync off anyway, do the options show then is monitor osd?

The display is Samsung Odyssey G52a.

Yes, after about 15 seconds it goes back to the previous setting. When I turn off adaptive sync, I get the same error message but it doesn't go back and I have to reset the monitor to turn adaptive sync back on, otherwise it's greyed out.

Watching the video, it seems the issue is not being able to use the monitor with adaptive sync switched off.

Thanks for the pictures.

I remember seeing something about pc/av mode in manual can have an effect on settings. Not totally sure exactly what or what it does. It's in system menu, what options have you got with that if you click on > ? If it's on try it off.

Found out what pc av does. Doubt it's that. Do you have HDR enabled in Windows or NvidiaCP?

I've tried toggling PC/AV mode before, didn't seem to do anything.

Nope, HDR isn't enabled in windows, can't seem to find it in Nvidia control panel.

It's already running in 165Hz mode.
Info in upper portion of the image - shows that.

You can verify it with UFO test.

Not so sure of that since it isn't highlighted in yellow like it is in the video. Maybe it is but don't think he's seeing that in NvidiaCP or Windows as the active refresh rate.

Was the first DP cable tried come with the monitor?

Games are capped at 60 fps (even league of legends) and all the settings show 60hz. I think I can tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz.
Also, UFO test shows 30fps with 30hz.

Hdr should be in change resolution output color format list if it's supported.

You might want to give custom resolution utility app a shot.
Colour uses default settings and if I change to manual, there's no HDR. I've also tried adjusting manual colour btw.

I can set custom resolutions in the nvidia control panel

I'm starting to think it's the monitor. I tried a HDMI (2.0) cable to my laptop which should be able to run 120hz at 1440p but every time I switch to hdmi 2.0 on the monitor settings, it comes up with the same error (except 144hz rather than 165hz). Using hdmi on my PC, I can only use 1.4 at 60hz as well.

Try use cru anyway. Only have DP connected to monitor. If hdmi is plugged in there disconnect it. Try as well monitor driver from Samsung.

If 144hz selectable, is it stable?

The DP cable you've used came with the monitor? There are dodgy cables, if it's not Hbr2 or 3 Vesa certified, you just don't know if its a fake.

Okay, I'll give cru a go, thanks!

Never had hdmi and DP plugged in at the same time. 144hz doesn't work either. I mean it's the same error message as the DP, except its 144hz instead of 165.

The DP is the one that came with the monitor, found it unused in the box with the instructions and stuff. I also googled the code on the sticker for both the HDMI and DP and both came up Samsung.

Cables shipped with monitors are usually 99% good odds, there has been some cases of faulty cables but rare. DP cables Samsung supply i would not think is an issue. It's those other off the shelf cables gotta be weary of.

Ok so I downloaded cru and used it by following this tutorial (

)

The one that was already there was 2560x1440 at 144hz, I tried using that but came with the same error message.
Then I tried to create my own to 165hz as the monitor demands of me but I get this. View: https://imgur.com/a/FiAqrVW

The highest hz I could get it to work was 162 and it showed up in my display settings, but then I got the same error message.
I actually had an older driver before updating. For both the PC and the monitor.

Yeah it shouldn't be this difficult. I'm leaning towards monitor at fault as well but if you like try contact Samsung and link them here so you don't have to thoroughly repeat yourself.

I'm going to take it to a friends house and try it on their PC (not ideal since they live far) but just to rule out my pc being the issue. Although seeing as I run into the same issue with HDMI with my laptop, I'm starting to think the monitor is struggling to go above 60hz itself lol. Then if that also fails, it seems I have no option but to contact Samsung support, I checked the receipt and luckily it's still under warranty.

Yes, the firmware can be updated via usb but I haven't been able to find any firmware update online.

If you're out of ideas (which my friend and I have been after 5 hours yesterday), I'd like to say a big thank you for your help, you've been amazing and super responsive. If you have a way where I can shout you lunch or something, it would be my pleasure!

You're welcome dude. I appreciate your kindness but no need. Good luck and if you get around to it let us know how you go. If your friend's place also confirms something else is wrong, hopefully Samsung doesn't take too long in their response. Lg is a pretty impressive display company these days so maybe something to think about.
