Question Monitor Only Works Sometimes When Plugged Into GPU

I have been running a 2 monitor setup for a couple years now. I have one main monitor that is plugged into the VGA on my motherboard and the second one that is plugged into my GPU via HDMI. For a while now when the computer restarts the second monitor will not start up and stay in sleep mode, however over the course of a week the monitor will randomly start to work and run from the GPU. Recently since I restarted the computer the second monitor has not powered on. I have updated the drivers in my gpu (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080) yet nothing works. Any ideas?

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time?

You might want to hook the monitor up to another donor system and see if the issue persists. Try replacing cables and even your display output source on your existing platform.
