Hello guys,
I'm looking to replace my monitor to something better for gaming (mostly competitive fps games), currently i'm using DELL ST2420L (TN panel, 1080p, 60hz refresh rate)

my current system is :
i7 7700
gpu is rtx 2060
with 16gb ddr4 ram

some friend told me to get 1440p monitor with 144hz refresh rate, some say 1080p with 144refresh rate

any recommendation for me to get max perfomance out of my gpu?
is freesync / gsync thingy is that important?
budgetwise is no more than 400$

Thank you

Personally I would go for a 1080p monitor with a 144hz refresh rate with the 2060.
While the 2060 can push some games at 1440, some more demanding ones might impact your frames at higher settings, although it all personal preference.
Gsync/freesync is a nice feature to have as well with 144hz as I'm pretty sure the RTX 2060 supports it now.

I have the RTX 2070 and still prefer 1080p 144hz, mostly because I prefer frames over resolution, but as stated its all up to preference :)

For competitive gaming you typically want as many FPS as possible. Syncing introduces input lag, though a great feature when you don't need the FPS.

An RTX 2060 isn't quite fast enough for recent AAA titles at 1440p, you wouldn't get anywhere near 144FPS. Nothing wrong with buying a monitor you can't max out though, people tend to keep them far longer than GPUs.

If your main focus is first person shooters, then I thing the 1080p 144hz (or more) panels are what you would be after. 180Hz and 240Hz monitors are out there.

I don't really recommend 27" 1080p panels, they can be difficult to read on since the pixel density gets pretty low. But if you only game with it, it could be worthwhile.
