So, I have bought a dell alienware AW2518HF monitor recently. I installed all the available drivers, dell's display manager and I have FreeSync turned on. But, I cannot find a way to make it display 240Hz. It only displays 120 hz and , as I mentioned before, I have tried everything to my knowledge to make it work. It is connected to my r9 390x GPU via HDMI 2.0 cable that came with the monitor. Hope you guys can suggest something, all ideas are welcome and I will try anything you throw my way.

The R9 390X supports HDMI 1.4a, which can do 1080p 144 Hz at the most. You need to use DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 (which your graphics card doesn't support) to get 1080p 240 Hz.

There is no such thing as an "HDMI 2.0 cable"; it is the source device and the display that determine the HDMI version. To have an HDMI 2.0 connection, you need a monitor with an HDMI 2.0 input port and a graphics card with an HDMI 2.0 output port, and to get the full HDMI 2.0 bandwidth you need a High Speed HDMI cable or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable which supports 18 Gbit/s (600 MHz) bandwidth. HDMI cables are not classified by "version".
