Hello,

I have a home built system, the monitor is a 19' samsung sync master. The system runs on a seagate baracuda harddrive 1TB, mushkin 2X4GB memory, GeoForce GTX 560Ti graphics card, Asus P8P67 motherboard, and a OCZ 700W power supply and an Intel core i7 processor.

This system was built in May.
I recently noticed that when the computer starts, the monitor remains dark and that only a restart could fix it. I am running windows 7.

The monitor was unresponsive to any of the buttons (menu, display, source) and on my most recent restart, I got a msg about how the computer wasn't able to start properly and had to restore itself.

I tried to disconnect the DVI cable to the monitor to try to rule out a HW issue, and since I got the "source missing" msg I am assuming my monitor works. Also, when the computer was able to start successfully the menu buttons all works too.

So I am assuming this is a problem with my computer, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.

Can anyone offer me some advice on what else I should check for?

Thanks a lot guys.

First thought that occurred to me is more monitor-cable-graphics card issue.

If you have the parts, an easy way would be to swap monitors then vid cables and see if the problem goes away.

Alternatively, if the buttons on the monitor operate when the monitor is NOT connected to the computer . . .

1) disconnect both ends of the video cable,
2) Reconnect the monitor end firmly in the socket. Test that the buttons still work.
3) Jiggle, torque, twist the cable plug to test for some king of loose/bad socket on the monitor. Do the buttons stop working?
4) Visibly inspect the cable for nicks, crush spots. If anything looks bad, consider replacing it.
5) Plug the other cable end into the vid card socket. Do the buttons still work?
6) Jiggle the vid card cable plug same as you did at the monitor. Do the buttons still work?
7) If the buttons only fail when you power up the computer . . . you either have a vid card or internal monitor issue. And then we're back to swapping in new parts one at a time.

Good luck.
