Holy crap! Did anyone else notice the huge die used for the new Montecito core Itanium 2 processors? It makes my Athlon XP 2800+ look like a SMT capacitor.

Not really that impressive. Performance wise.

To Quote from the article
"Santa Clara (CA) - Intel today said that a 4-way server system based on the upcoming Montecito dual-core processor outran a 4-way RISC-based system by about 60 percent in a benchmark test."

They do not state what RISC based system it was.
Given that the CPU is dual core and it was a 4 way system I would have thought that 60% performance improvement was a little on the low side..., especially givent the die size.
Would need to know about heat output as well

Im impressed by the transistor count tough! Whats the yield on these chips?? heh

yeah,it's super strong and expensive,
it's used for server and science compute, not related to us
What the hell that means ?
Are you trying to say that Itanium is a good performer ?

It's the worst CPU ever made.

i agree
i said it strong just because it's used for science compute
as far as i know, itanium is not able to process x86 instructions, intel gives itanium IA-64 instructions for server service
o,in the market ,xeon and operton are easy to buy,at least i can find them in the market
now i'm interested in AMD Athlon64 FX,i want it!!

I didn't mean to imply it was a good performer; I'm not a fan of the IA64 ISA at all.

But man that's a huge chunk of silicon. I wouldn't want to be the engineering guy that the execs talk to when they see the yield numbers.

Yields wouldnt be that horrible I think, most of the die is cache which has built in redundancy.

If you look at the size of the cores, while not having any numbers, i doubt they are each much bigger than a P4 core.

upstairs,your user is Xeon??
cool name!itanium is not related to us ,don't mention it
i heard that intel has publiced a processor called P4 506,
it has 2.66ghz and 533 fsb and surport EM64T,maybe it will
be cheap.it's reported that P4 506 can easily oc to 4ghz!!
i wish intel to offer more hing perfermance/$ products
^_^

Well I am completely lost as to what you are trying to say I can't see any sentence structure punctuation or correct grammar.

Now I am not mocking you or anything I simply can’t make sense of the point you are trying to make.
