Hello guys,

my WD Passport 1TB Failed today and i am recovering data from it to my seagate HDD. It is just around 1-2 years old.
All my HDD's are at least a year old so I am planning to change all of them.

I need two types of HDD,

-Performance and Speed [for working on big game projects]

Long LifeSpan and reliable
To store all my work files which should be there for me forever. 5400 rpm speed is good as long as it is realible.

I am looking at WD Black and WD Green Series. Are they good ?

For the storage its ok with any networking storage. I don't want ssd's. They are costlier..they perform very well but also cost so much. I am looking to have 1TB main files and around 5TB storage. [Looked at WD BOOK and getting a 10TB with RAID 1 will be good I guess]

HGST have the longest MTBF in real life use, Seagate the worst. I just had a WD 2Gb drive fail after impressive 22000 on hours. So I'd guess you're good with WD. (It was an enterprise disk though)

At the moment Hitachi appear to on top of the heap for 3.5" drives. Some Toshiba drives are actually Hitachis underneath.

As for externals, I would avoid the pre-packaged models, especially those with hardware encryption (eg Passports and My Book Essentials). External enclosures are usually hotboxes with flimsy mini-USB connectors. Spend the extra money and get an externally powered 3.5" aluminium enclosure with cooling fan, plus Firewire and eSATA.

one thing I will say about WD is if or when I have a drive go bad I fill out a ticket with them send it in and they ok the rma and send me a brand new full retail boxed drive even though the drive when I bought it was a oem loose/bulk drive like you mostly get from newegg [shipped is bubble wrap] .. I feel that's pretty nice service from them

Macs use Firewire, but are they real computers?

eSATA interfaces ensure that you will not be affected by any 32-bit LBA limit in the USB firmware, nor will there be any encryption or similar annoyances in the data path.

As for WD's RMA policy, can we expect that the replacement drive will not be a recertified unit rather than a new one?

so far I only had 2 drives go bad and they sent me full retail box drives to replace them .. quick and easy , but I do know how times can change and things may be different today on that ... [that's 2 wd drives in 15 years ] so that's who I stick with [opinion]

I believe WD now owns Hitachi as well

My pc is custom build with m6e mobo. I think I can buy extra hardwares for firewire.

I am thinking of WD Caviar Black WD1003FZEX 3.5'' Internal HDD 2 HDD RAID 1 setup or WD Caviar Black WD5003AZEX 3.5'' Internal HDD 4 HDD with RAID 10 Setup for my main local disk.

and one WD My Book Duo 12TB Hard Drive (WDBLWE0120JCH) Raid 1 setup.

Is it good ?
