Currently I own a MSI 970A-G43. My CPU is FX 8350, overclocked to 4.5 Ghz because the motherboard will not go higher than 1.45V. My GPU is R9 290.

I know my motherboard is a lower end motherboard and I'd like to upgrade to a better motherboard.

But I just wanted to ask if motherboards have an impact on game performances. Only game I'm currently playing is Battlefield 4.

Solution
That would be a worthwhile upgrade if you have the money. ASUS M5A99 is a great board, or the ASUS Crosshair V Formula if you really have money to spend.
Not really to answer your question, If you want better game performance your best performance gain is to upgrade your graphics card. The motherboard doesn't do much and barely increases performance. You will find it extremely hard to tell the difference between a $100 Motherboard and a $300+. If you can overclock then there isn't much of a reason to upgrade. Upgrading the motherboard will only give you more features and more PCI-E slots and so on..

I was thinking of upgrading to FX990 board trying to push my CPU overclock just a bit further. What are you thoughts on that?

The reason why I was considering an upgrade was because I read that FX 8350 runs better with FX990 than 970. I was also going to OC a bit more with a board that allows higher vcore. What are your thoughts on that?
