Motherboard MSI Z97 Gaming 3 update BIOS fail

Hi, so today I just wanted to update my mobo BIOS just to have everything up-to-date. (I know I should not do it). It was mainly because I have Haswell Refresh CPU, which is quiet new, so I thought that maybe it would be better, to have newer bios update. So I downloaded bios 2.3 (before 2.0) and because everybody said, that liveupdate (soft by MSI) is not good for update BIOS, I chose to make it via M-flash. I made everything right, it started to flash, I had to go out for 10 mins. After I came back, my PC was ON but monitor screen was black. So I restarted my PC, but still there was just black screen. I can hear the fans, so I hope, it is not PSU thing. But nothing more. I tried something with CMOS, tried diff. monitor, tried turn on computer only with mobo and CPU, everything else was not connect and still the same black screen. Also tried to get battery of mobo and put it in after an hour. I think that it was bad flash, but I did everything right . I´m lost. What do you think guys. Any idea? Sry for my bad english, I´m form Bohemia.

msi seems to have a lot of bios update issues and they even admit it see if these help any

according to msi the 4790 should work under the first release bios v20 the 4790k needs v21 why don't know but if you don't have the ''k'' chip you should not of needed to flash

the thing I don't get is why the 4790 ''K'' needs the v21 bios and the 4790 don't ?? unless its just a bios tweak for the overclocking settings ??

Maybe. But I will definitely stick with 2.0. Now just wait for another mobo, hope I won´t have to reinstal my OS and that my CPU is not broken after that unsuccesfull flash. :/. And of course I hope, after i will buy R9 290 card, I will be able to max some games, couse that´s the reason why I put together this PC.

sorry to say that msi just don't look so good on that support [opinion] and theres a lot of folks with msi boards here with bios flash issues ..

will msi rma the board for you and make it good??

Exact same thing happened to me, same Mobo, same problem. Using 4670k.

Had to get the board RMA'd - very disappointing. Amazon were very helpful however.

msi to me sure seems to be funny with there bios stuff and seems too many issues coming in here with flashing its like they need a better tool for this or something and there way over hyped up web site hurts my eyes

Sorry that happened bro, I feel your pain.

This is a HUGE issue with MSI boards. Many of the upper tier ones have a dual BIOS dip switch, so if you bork one BIOS you can switch and use the back up (like I am right now), but unfortunately the Gaming 3 board has no back up BIOS. You're likely going to have to RMA. Sorry.

I did the exact same thing with my Z97 Gaming 7 using the MSI tool "M Flash." My board came with Bios v1.1 and my i7 4790k was supposed to work better with v1.4 (and there was a new v1.5 available as well).

I researched it and saw that all kinds of people were bricking their boards using the Live Update tool (it updates the BIOS through Windows), so I tried the M Flash. Everything seemed to work successfully, but then my computer started power cycling over and over, blank screen, wont boot. Bummer.

I switched to BIOS B made a back up and tried to reflash A, but nothing will take. I have tried a dozen different things, and cant re-flash BIOS A. M Flash fails every time. So now I'm running on my back up BIOS (and I updated it using M Flash to v1.5 and it worked 1st try, using exact same method. Didn't change a thing). Its got to be something to do with updating/flashing BIOS A.

MSI needs to fix this.

I flashed the BIOS and everything works fine, I finally got a stable overclock too. The peripherals also didn't get detected by the back USB ports at first boot so I had to restart after the boot if I wanted to use the keyboard properly. Ever since that BIOS update all of my issues went away.

Glad it worked for you! I'm not brave enough to update my BIOS with my two msi boards even though I have USB 3.0 issues.

but if it anit broke then just don't fix it ... I had plenty of boards that I never needed a bios flash for them and they work just fine

So, if it is broke, how does one proceed with MSI boards? Seems to be a huge risk associated with updating their BIOS. I've lost steam with MSI and built a mini itx with an ASUS H97i Plus and wish I would have done that from the beginning rather than waist two builds with MSI boards.
