Hi !
Rather basic question but i am wondering if Motherboards can have coil whine or generate audible noise in general ?
Background:
I've built an almost brand new system. Ditched my case after 11 years and the only component that was carried over is the NVMe SSD and the GPU temporarily as I am waiting for the new 50 series.
CPU: 9800 X3D
MB: ROG Crosshair X870E hero
Ram: 64gb ddr5
GPU: 3090 Kingpin
My previous system was whisper quite even under heavy load i barely heard anything.
Before i finished building this new PC, I assembled everything just on the MB box, flashed bios, installed windows, ran a few stress tests...etc Even then i notice this clicking noise that it was making figured it was just some cable potentially being in the way, but after having built the full system in the case it didn't go away.
I tried to eliminate everything and so far the only option i am coming to is the motherboard:
- I disabled all fans temporarily: noise didnt go away
- even disconnected GPU entirely: noise didn't go away
- swapped in my old PSU from the previous system, noise didn't go away.
- played around with ram, swapped them around, went down to dual or even single channel, no change
So i am wondering with only the MB left is that even an option ? the system is not overclocked at all and pretty much runs at stock. the noise is present almost immediately after bootup, and it doesn't seem to matter whether whether the system is under load or just idling.
I don't want to RMA a board if there is a legit reason for this, but since I'll have do so swapping with the hopefully new GPU next year it's not like I won't have to do it anyway.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
