Motherboard not recognizing new video card

Hey all --

I recently decided I should upgrade an aging video card, and decided to pick up the mid-range AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB. I received the card today and immediately went about swapping out my NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB with this new card.

Immediate issue is that I simply cannot get any video output from the card to monitor. From what I can tell, my motherboard (GA-73UM-S2H) is simply not detecting the card at all. My BIOS is set to first look for a card in the PCIE slot, and then use the onboard video if nothing is detecting. Well, the onboard video appears to work fine.

When I boot into Windows, a quick look at my device manager shows that only the onboard video is detected, period. I've even gone through the process of installing the HD 7850's drivers that came on the CD-ROM that shipped with the card in the hopes that magic would happen, but I've still got nothing.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or troubleshooting tips here for this thing.

Some additional info: I have a 600W power supply, which should be enough, and I've certainly supplied power to the new card (the fans are spinning).

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Or, if you're not a cereal killer and live in Massachussetts and would like to come over and get this working for me, beer and pizza is on me. :)

I'm a cereal killer. Mom's always like, "Who ate all the cinnamon toast crunch so fast?!"

I just bought the same gpu type today, got the XFX radeon 7850 2gb and a 430 w corsair psu. I installed and got "no input" screen on monitor so I took out the gpu and plugged monitor into standard hdmi and everything is functioning normally. I multi meter tested the 6 pin pcie power from the gpu and it's good so the problem is not with the psu (which I'm glad I read this because you having the same problem with a 600w means mine is not, not working because of a lack of power.) I uninstalled the intel integrated graphics driver and that did nothing besides make my screen resolution suck. My next step was going to be installing the cd drivers it came with, but since you've already done that I guess I won't. I will be watching this thread closely, I hope this reply gets you another shot at the top of the list so someone will help us solve our problems. My setup: Syx MPC 10, 430W corsair, 2x8gb 1600 ddr3 crucial ballistix, 2600k i7 (integrated graphics), 500gb hdd, XFX Core Edition FX-785A-CNL4 Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16. Windows 7 x64 pro.

Not a silly question, but yes, I have! In fact, I've basically connected it the same way the GeForce 8800 was connected, and that works fine if I swap it back in.

I've swapped the card back and forth with the GeFORCE (which I'm using now, and it works fine) a few times; I initially thought maybe I wasn't making a connection on the board, but that doesn't appear to be the case (at least a physical connection).

The PSU I'm using is this:

It's not the best (actually was a hand-me-down replacement when my last supply went kaput), but it's done the trick and works fine with the GeFORCE card. I'm kind of hoping NOT to have to spend dollars on equipment in an effort to troubleshoot this, particularly the PSU (which appears to be working fine with other hardware). At least not right now. That said, is it possible this is the issue if it runs and works fine with the other video card?

In the meantime, I'm hoping there's other things I can try, something I might be missing. (Is it possible there's an IRQ conflict with another device? *shrug* Can you tell I'm kind of just making stuff up here?

Thanks to everyone for their input so far. Keep it coming if you have suggestions.

The 8800 is probably more power hungry than the 7850. Have you tried the different outputs on it? Should have an HDMI, a few DVI ports. If that doesnt work can always RMA and try again. Had a 7750 show up like that, couldnt get an output from the HDMI but the DVI worked fine. RMAd it.

I agree, this card certainly needs more power than the GeFORCE (which is what I think you meant). I've tried various ports and can't get any output. It's pretty clear that the motherboard is just not recognizing the card for some reason, because my BIOS is set to look for a second card, and if does not find one, to boot the on board card. And the onboard card outputs video when the HD 7850 is installed into the PCEI slot.

Short of trying to install the card into another computer to see if I have an issue, I'm not sure what else to try. So I think I will do that. Fingers are crossed that the card also doesn't work in another motherboard, and I can just get a replacement. That's far easier than me trying to determine what else might be conflicting with it as far as my hardware is concerned.

One last thing: does anyone who is a bit smarter than me in this area see a reason why my motherboard and this video card would not talk to each other? I cannot see a clear reason, but I'm admitting here I'm not the savviest. (That's why I'm begging for help here!)

Can someone please verify this, I was told AMD cards work just fine with intel CPU's.

Same. Couldn't have guessed this would have been a problem, otherwise I wouldn't have dropped $200 on this card!

Okay. I'll give this a shot.

Another thought: is it possible that updating the MB BIOS might solve this problem, or is that out of the realm of possibility? I believe I am a few versions behind, but have had no reason to update, so I haven't bothered.

FWIW, I've actually reached out to Gigabyte (who makes both the MB and the card) to see if there's a known problem with compatability. I'll update with any details for those who are curious.

Yup, just contacted support. These cards work just fine on Intel MOBO. His only advice was to try DVI and if that doesn't work RMA it. I'm at work so I can't try this until I get home, I'm pissed though because this was the last thing I was going to try before I got too tired and said F it I'm going to bed.

Not as important, but he also mentioned that the cards can be picky with the type or length of HDMI cable. I don't know how this makes sense because I thought HDMI's are just a bunch of bound copper wiring, but I'll give it a shot as well.

Well a motherboard BIOS update may work. But if it doesnt specifically say it updates something about the pci-e compatibility, dont update. More can go wrong with a bad BIOS update. Should work with the 7850. But try it in another PC first. Then RMA it. If it still persists when its returned, maybe a BIOS update is needed. But thats doubtful.

Bringing this thread back to life, since I haven't officially solved my problem, but I think this might be a case of my own hardware ignorance (which I'm okay with!):

The card I'm trying to use is PCIE 3.0, but it sounds like my MB is a PCEI 2.0 compliant board. This would mean that I cannot use this particular card with my current rig, correct? I would have to either swap out the motherboard (which I don't really feel like doing right now, honestly) or replace this 3.0 card with a PCIE 2.0 card.

So follow up questions:

- Can anyone recommend any comparable (or decent) GPUs that are PCI-E 2.0 compliant?
- Worse case I consider upgrading my MB (this kind of hurts my head, honestly), can anyone recommend a good, relatively cheap board?

I'm not certain but I believe it does not matter which pci version. I have an old post about this , its the 11th comment down by user: looniam. It says, "pci 2.0 or 3.0 also doesn't matter both are fully compatible with each other. .but know sure if there is a difference in the case size. most mid towers are fine. got a spec size? "

I don't know how to link but here's the url: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/378781-33-advice-compatibility

Just to verify, my computer is running a 3.0 card (XFX radeon core 7850 2gb) on a 2.0 port mobo MSI M165 - E2- B3. And also to follow up on my older post my HDMI port is functioning I just needed the right drivers.

Also to clarify your older post, the Radeon uses less electricity than the 8800 that's what the other poster was trying to say.

Honestly, you might have just got a bad card.

Great -- thanks for the response. Having a bad card, while annoying, is my hope for this situation. I'm going to swap out the card for a new one and see if I have better luck. Thanks to everyone who replied. I was honestly terrified that I'd get condescending responses from more experience PC folk (because THE INTERNET), but everyone has been pretty damned helpful.

Update on this is that I received a replacement card and had the same problems. I took the leap and updated my motherboard BIOS, hoping that might rectify the situation (being the only thing I hadn't tried), and I continued to have the same issue. I'd actually reached out to Gigabyte (the manufacturer of the GPU and my MB) to see if there were any known compatability issues or if they had any suggestions, and their 4-day-later response was (I kid you not):

"Dear Customer,

You need to make sure that all proper power are connected onto the card."

Okay, well, I hadn't thought of that. THANKS, GIGABYTE! My current plan is to pick up a comparable NVIDIA card to replace my older NVIDIA card (that works just fine), and see how that works out for me. I will also make sure it's not manufactured by Gigabyte because I don't think I can handle their exceptional customer service.

i had a 4850 install problem where my video card would cut off and the screen would go black, then the onboard would cut on, so what i did to fix it was to unistall the drivers from the onboard video then install the gpu and the driver disc for the gpu only and it works fine now. hope this helps you.i have just had better luck using the disc that comes with the card, good luck.
