To start off with, I'm not completely sure what is the problem but I am fairly certain the problem lies with the motherboard.
About a week ago my computer randomly stopped turning on within the normal 2 seconds (ssd boot speed). It then started to take a REALLY long time to reach to mobo POST screen and after that everything would be normal (windows logo > log in screen > desktop, everything would load fast after the POST screen). A few days after that it would take an even longer time to reach POST, about 20 minutes maybe more. I really found this to be problematic so I started troubleshooting.
I had recently installed a new Asus Strix GeForce GTX 970 GPU so I decided to take that out and boot up my computer. That solved nothing.
I changed my PSU from my 750w to a spare 520w I had hanging about the house and still nothing.
I unplugged all my hard drives which included my solid state drive which has my OS on it so the PC would boot without any data or OS present. Nothing again.
Apart from all of this, I assumed the CPU was fine. All I did for the CPU was take it out and check for broken/bent pins and all was in order.
As the last attempt to fix the problem I tried taking out the mobo battery for about 5 minutes then putting it back in, then boot up PC. Nothing.
Then I tried applying the CMOS jumper to short the mobo. Both removing the battery and shorting the mobo were expected to restore the factory settings. Neither worked for me.
The last thing I did was to have the battery removed AND have the CMOS jumper shorting the mobo overnight.
First thing in the morning I put the jumper back to 1-2 and put the battery back in and switched on the PC. And who would have guessed it, it actually turned on.
So that fixed my first problem and I'm not sure if that strategy will work every single time. The next time I turned off my PC I just turned the switch off at the PSU until I wanted to use it the next day. The PC took a while to turn on, but it still turned on. Every day after that I just put the computer to sleep instead of turning it right off.
Just yesterday I accidentally turned it off instead of sleep and it will not turn back on. Well actually the tower itself will turn on, all the internal LEDs light up and the fans spin etc, but nothing shows up on the monitor. And because of this I changed monitors and have concluded that the monitor is not the problem. All things considered I believe something is up with the motherboard, could be the BIOS chip, battery or something else I am unaware of. Are there any other troubleshooting steps I could do or would it be best to just get a replacement...once I have the money for one 🙁
