Motherboard power consumption (Watts)

Hello, I have an Asus P7P55D and I was wondering if motherboards in general consume energy on their own. I have a 750 Watt PSU but I am not sure if its enough for my build. Can someone tell me how i would figure this out?

Well, you could list all of your components including the make and model of the " 750 watt PSU ", or you could punch them into a psu calculator

750 watts is way more power than those specs would require.

Oh really? howd you calculate that and would it make a big difference if i overclocked my cpu to like 4.0ghz? Thanks for the help delluser1.

Yup.
By having a basic knowledge of the power consumption of the components, no it wouldn't make a difference if you overclocked.

Hm...maybe I'm calculating wrong but im getting 850 Watts recommended (100% wattage consumption with 30% aging thing).
I put:
i5 at 4.2 mhz/1.4 volts
Radeon 4890
1 dvd-rw/dvd+rw
1 pci-e x16 and 2 pci-e x 1 (Im not using these slots but i put it anyways)
4 usb devices (not sure wha this means)
5 120 fans

Can you tell me what I put in wrong and thanks for the help.

Sounds like it.
Not really sure.
Leave the reccomended settings alone ( 90% ), and remove the extra pci-e cards that you didn't include in your original specs.
4 USB devices don't use much power, so not a big deal.
I generally use 25% Cap aging, there are far to many variables for the calculator to be accurate there.

Motherboard power consumption won't be more than 40 - 50 watts not counting memory.

Years ago, when I built my second C2 system (G'byte P35-DS3P, Q6600, 2 GB of DDR2 RAM), I was curious where all the power was going, so I borrowed a lab calibrated clamp-on ammeter from work and measured everything I could.

I measured about 4 amps at 5 volts (a larger, full featured motherboard should pull a little more), 1 amp at 12 volts, and 6 amps at 3.3 volts for the RAM. That's 52 watts including the memory.

OC'ing the CPU (1.2625 volts stock to 1.425 volts OC'd) increased the CPU power consumption a bit less than 25%.

Unless you have a basket full of hard drives, any PSU that will adequately power your CPU and GPU will have no problem powering the motherboard.
