Motherboard powering on and off

So the parts are
Z170 gaming board
Generic 550w power supply
I5 6600k
And while breadboarding I failed step 1, and the symptoms are the board lighting up, the fans starting, but no beeps or anything. I'm pretty sure that means motherboard death but I want to make sure before I run off to get a new one.
I know the power supply is fine because the other setup uses it. Unfortunately it's an amd build so I can't text there.
