Motherboard Speaker is Ticking when ATX_12v_2x is connected

I just built a new PC with a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R and it worked fine for about two weeks... Then I noticed a ticking sound coming from the motherboard speaker (not a fan, not a hard drive or dvd drive).

After the ticking started the computer would not wake up after it went to sleep, the mobo speaker would just tick away like a clock.

I took the mobo out and bench tested it. The Motherboard Speaker is Ticking when the ATX_12v_2x is connected.... Disconnect it and the ticking goes away.

Any suggestions? Bad motherboard? Bad Power Supply?

The ticking is generated by a software routine (probably in the BIOS). You disconnect the CPU power (the ATX plug) and the ticking goes away because you do not have a CPU to execute any code.

Have you tried restoring factory default settings in the BIOS? That would restore the standard power settings. Long shot, but it's a simple, cheap thing to try.

Otherwise, I am inclined to think it's the motherboard.

This motherboard has a "Clear CMOS" button on the back. While the "Clear CMOS" button is depressed, the ticking stops. As soon as the button is released the ticking starts again.

Looks like it will be going back to Micro Center. Glad I live 3 miles away.

Thank you for your answer. I took it back to MicroCenter and the exchanged it for the same mobo NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! How is that for customer service in 2010?

I took it home and set it up with the new motherboard and it worked like a charm.
