It seems that the default ringer for the alarm function is "vibe dot".
Since this makes me almost no noise, it seems to be a very strange
default for the alarm.

I tried going into settings/ring styles/loud detail, and changing the
"alarms" setting to One Moment or a few other ringer styles. In all
cases, when I went to set another alarm, the default remains "vibe dot"
and it has to be deliberately changed for each alarm one sets.

Isn't this kind of strange for an alarm?

Am I missing something?

I agree. But then think of Motorola as a business oriented phone
company and you might picture someone setting an alarm for a high
priced board meeting...

I use it to take an afternoon nap. The first one never woke me up. I
stumbled upon my answer by accident: When you "unset" the alarm, just
disable the alarm and it will be stored. Say I want to wake up at 6PM
after work. I have the alarm set (the first time I changed the ring
tone) and simply change the time to suit me.

Personally I like the one in my old LG V6000 best. It was quick and
simple.

My biggest problem is that not enough of any phone is customizable to
make it my perfect phone. Motorola has some features, LG others and I
even miss some on my first phone, an Audiovox 8900. I guess that if
they made them too good, you would keep it.

I set an alarm for someone's birthday. It woke me up at 12:00am that day--
is this the default? I assume you can change this?

yes, you can change the time.

The other suggestion to disable the alarm, rather than to remove it,
sounds like a wonderful fix for having to reset the ringer type each
time.

Are you talking about the alarm clock or the datebook (calendar)
application? The alarm clock does not mention dates; just a time, like a
daily morning wakeup call on a conventional alarm clock. The datebook
function allows you to set the time and date of an event, with an
optional repetition rate (daily, weekly, etc). Actually, the alarm is an
optional part of the calendar entry, and you set how much before the
event you want to get the alarm. And the alarm tone is set in the ring
style, not when setting up the event.
