Motorola SBG6580 WiFi extremely slow

Hello,

I recently purchased the Motorola SBG6580 Modem+Router and I did a WiFi speed test after noticing it was extremely slow. I ran multiple tests on Speedtest.net and the download speeds never surpassed 5mbps (typically was around 2-3mbps). However, when connected via the ethernet (hardwired), I'm getting download speeds of 120mbps. A drop that drastic has me thinking it is a configuration setting with the Motorola. Any thoughts?

What are you using for the wifi testing?

What are the wireless settings on the router?

Optimum settings for wireless are Pure N (not mixed), WPA2 security with AES encryption, auto channel, and auto bandwidth.

I've been testing my wifi speed on speedtest.net. Also, I have gone through that router setup and have optimized as suggested - still no luck.

No I meant what device(s) are you using to do the wireless testing.

I assume you registered the new modem with your ISP?

I've been using my laptop an mobile device. And yes, I did so automatically online when I first plugged in the Motorola through Comcast.

Have you checked other nearby wireless networks? it could be that someone is using the same channel as you are, and that causes interference.

If you have an android phone, get the free app "wifi analyzer". Or on a windows pc (that has a wireless adapter), get the free software INSSIDer. both of these will show all the wireless networks nearby, and what channels they are on. You need to choose the channel with least conflict. On 2.4Ghz wireless, channels 1,6,11 are the ones to use.
