Mouse button re-mapping utility?

Hey experts...

I just baught a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0, and the
software/drivers that comes with it (and from microsoft.com) does not allow
you to map one of the side buttons (the back and forward buttons) to a key
like F8.

Does anyone know of any free utilities that can do this? Thanks.

You could always try the old IntelliType 4.2 drivers that had so many
more functions avaiable than the new 5.0 ones. I am not sure if your
mouse is supported by the old version, but you can try it here:

The Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 will not have full functionality if you use
Intellipoint 4.x.
You will lose scroll wheel support.

If you want to use Intellipoint 4.x, get it directly from Microsoft

4.12 is the latest version of the 4.x version drivers (earlier revisions of
the 4.x software had installation issues with Win9x OS among other

Thanks Jason, wasn't entirely sure as I don't use the IntelliPoint
software. It is unlikely my BlueTooth Desktop will be supported by
IntelliType ever again after SP2.

LOL, care to elaborate 😛 (I know you can't)

I just know that IntelliType Software for BlueTooth is no longer
compatible with Service Pack 2 as the new BlueTooth Interface in the
Control Panel is far superior to the software and therefor completely
replaces the software. Service Pack 2 will not allow you to even
install the IntelliType software for BlueTooth 😉

Intellipoint 4.9 (or whatever the version was that came with the Bluetooth
keyboard/mouse set) won't install on SP2 (and rightly so).

However, the next release of Intellipoint will fix that (release date is
imminent).

Same idea on the Intellitype side.

That is interesting since the explanation given to me as to why the old
version no longer worked in SP2 was because they felt that the new
BlueTooth interface in the Control Panel was much better and basically
replaced the need for the software.

Whoever gave you that explanation was speaking in general.

Hardware manufacturers are still able to add their own value added
modifications (i.e. Intellipoint functionality from Microsoft or whatever).
